Darazhi's Gatehouse

The simple gatehouse became a monument to Darazhi, without whom it could never have been built
— Weinadi history book
The gatehouse is one of the more impressive gateways in Akho. It's a free-standing structure, made from stone imported from the south, making it stand out as significantly lighter compared to the surrounding stone. Originally, the top of the building was even with the height of the top of the chasm, but erosion puts the top spire at slightly above the edge.   Darazhi of the Ouresh is a rare figure in that he is equally famous among his own people, the Dheizei, and their neighbors, the Basadu.   The Asayo-Djemndarra Accords did a lot to help relations between the Garruw and Weinadi, so that they stopped killing each other. But this didn't stop every issue. One of the Garruw began to plague the Weinadi around Akho, picking them off.   By most regards, the Dheizei should have been hit the hardest, as surface dwellers. But the murderer seemed to enjoy the challenge of trying to catch the Weinadi who lived in the more difficult to reach areas of the chasm around Akho. Darazhi was the one to stop this murderer.   This was during a difficult period of time between the people of Akho and the Dheizei tribes in the area. Darazhi's acts were lauded and as a result, the leaders of Akho constructed a special symbolic gate at the surface entrance to the city. The gate was meant to be left open at all times, in honor of Darazhi.

Architecture

The gatehouse is constructed to allow the visiting Dheizei room for about twenty people to stay. It is composed of a white stone gateway connected to a free-standing home (unusual when more typically Weinadi buildings are carved into the rock wall). The tower next to it stretches up quite high, to the edge of the surface. The surface is trimmed with elaborate carvings, that if viewed in order tell the story of the difficulties the people of Akho had with the Dheizei, the Garruw who came to kill them all, and then how Darazhi entrapped and killed the Garruw. The gateway itself is carved with depictions of the victory celebrations.   The gatehouse is among the more carefully maintained historical buildings of the city. It is still regularly used by visiting Dheizei, and there is a part of the city's art fund dedicated to keeping up the quality of the carvings in the face of the strong weather.
