War of the Oni

Long ago, Mal’Godok, a powerful Oni, scoured the lands in search of powerful magic items with which to conquer. It was said that the most powerful of artifacts, Four Cosmic Stones, were his grand prize. With these, he would be near unbreakable. Though his truest motivations are unknown, subject only to speculation. Mal’Godok amassed a following, a charismatic cult to a demon king; an army of worshippers. He united tribes of outcast races, Orks, Goblinoids, Gnolls among others. They scoured the land, destroying settlements and villages, towns and cities alike, in search of power. It is said that at his most powerful, Mal’Godok had amassed a horde to dwarf a dragon’s greed. It was this, which drew the attention of Xyterax, The Stormborn King.   High in the Daigara mountains, Xyterax and his armies launched an assault on the Oni’s forces. It is widely accepted that this was a means of self preservation and protection, though it may well be that the Dragon was shamed by the Oni’s hoard.   Xyterax’s armies won the day, and the Oni was captured. The Dragon’s mages imprisoned him in the golden mask. And there he remained.

History

Mal'Godok was a powerful Oni mage. Possessing more cunning than any other Oni. A hunger for power outweighed his thirst for flesh, and he marched Eastward across Ezira.   In his travels he amassed a cult of worshippers, slaves and warriors by uniting hundreds of smaller clans across the Savage Wastes (now The Central Territories).   He is noteworthy for uniting Orkish clans alongside Goblinoid, Gnoll, Ogre, Dwemer and other races which would usually be at war. A dangerous force in his own right, made more so by his strength of mind.   It is oft wondered if his march may ever have come to an end if not for the intervention of Xyterax, the Stormborn King of Daigas, whos armies managed to quell the forward charge of the Oni.   Mal'Godok and his forces fell, ambushed at their weakest while crossing the sea to Bothica. It is unknown what became of Mal'Godok's body after the assault.

Secrets

While his forces were thwarted, Mal'Godok proved to be a powerful enemy to the dragon. Xyterax in desperation sought instead to capture the Oni, and trap him in an eternal prison, to be locked away forever in an unmarked tomb.   The Oni was imprisoned in a golden theatre mask. This mask was indeed hidden away and forgotten to time, until it came into the possession of an adventurer named Nerle Stergoda. Believing it to be another piece of treasure at first, Nerle became tempted by the Oni's whispers, embracing the mask and eventually wearing it. With this act, Mal'Godok entered her very soul, and bound her fate to him. She became his instrument of escape.   Nerle made her way throughout Ezira, disguised as a humble bard, whos music entranced those of a weak will. She lured her subjects to a binding ritual where she and the Demon tried to take their souls, in order to rebuild Mal'Godok's power.   Stopped during the ritual, The mask was removed by Nerle's sister Marion, with the help of a group of mercenaries. Believing her soul to still be fused to the demon, Marion entered into the mask's prison dimension. While attempting to free her sister, she and her band freed the Oni from its tethers, unleashing him once more upon the world.   Now, seeking to overcome the power that once overthrew him, and determined never to fall again, Mal'Godok has begun uniting the clans again, and is searching for something. It is believed the answers to stop him may lie in Daigas, in the tomb of Xyterax, The Stormborn King.
