Swamp Rot

"The smell was awful, like a rotting corpse had simmered in the stomach acid of the swamps themselves. I didn't even need to see them, the smell alone would attract Death herself. Of course, once I'd peeled back the soiled cloth, even my hard-earned constitution couldn't handle the onslaught of aroma wafting from the slicked wounds beneath. Not a proud moment for someone of my profession, I assure you. Now, it is never a good sign when the flesh takes on a darker shade of green, let alone the blackened gooey mess that had replaced the skin around the wounds. We tried everything we knew, starting by dealing with the necrosis and then the whatever we could do to slow the infection rate. Nothing worked. Amputation would have been a mercy, but since none had the tools we were forced to poison the poor sods. What a waste. Even the crocs wouldn't touch the corpses."
  • Arthur Doralis, Head Physician recounting his experiences with Swamp Rot
  • A horrible bacterial infection that latches on to open wounds and exposed flesh, causing a rapid necrotizing effect. Victims of the bacteria would soon succumb to illness and chronic fatigue, as their bodies attempt to fight off the infection. If not treated early enough, the infection would spread to the bloodstream and soon find its way to the heart. None survived the infection during its earlier days. Puzzling physicians and healers alike.   However, a cure was developed more recently, boasting a 65% cure success rate. Although still requiring early application, the cure rids the body of the infection and - when applied as a balm - kills off the bacteria. This discovery has greatly improved the quality of life for all in the community.
