Savage Sea Storms

At the edge of the known world, the lands are surrounded by a body of water known as the "Savage Sea". Seldom traversed, these seas are notorious for their cataclysmic storms, visible from the shores of Ankorrah. Broiling, dark swirling clouds mark the beginning of a Savage Sea Storm, sometimes taking days to coalesce into an massive torus of near-black thunder clouds. Although never touching the shores of the known world, these storms are a spectacle often regarded as a natural phenomenon. A gorgeous and terrifying display of lightning, distant raging seas and delayed rolls of chest-shaking thunder. Some have even come to worship the phenomenon, calling it the work of "The Storm Lord" or similar such deity.    For weeks after such a storm, strange creatures and objects alike wash up on the shores of the land, a marvel in its own right. These occurrences often have names of their own, relating to festivals, religious ceremonies etc. The creatures that wash up range from small and curious to gargantuan and terrifying. Once, it is said, that a Kraken washed up upon the remote shores of Northern Ankorrah. Although no evidence of such an occasion exists, small cults and religious sects have sprung up as a direct result of this story.    Veteran sailors, those who claim to have ventured into the darkest waters of the Savage Sea, tell of ordeals spent in the eye of such a storm. The common trope for such stories is for the storyteller to be the lone survivor of a sea monster attack - heralded by a Savage Sea Storm. Another common tale speaks of a spiritual awakening within the eye of such a storm, the storyteller detailing the turning-point in their life when they were touched by a deity or similarly divine being. Each story told lending itself to the ever-raging bonfire of myth and legend.    Most curiously, however, beyond the awe-inspiring power of the storms, above the stories of strange creatures and stranger encounters; is the story of what lies beyond these storms. In the most remote parts of the known world, where commonfolk are outnumbered by strange visitors, whispers crawl around the seediest of establishments. These rumours stinking of danger and evil, and often told by those only wishing ill. It is believed, should one be so lucky as to ride out a Savage Sea Storm, and make it with vessel intact to the great beyond, that a land touched by the gods themselves exists near the edges of the world. Hidden and protected from their failed creations, or maybe even separated as a trial for the worthy. Such stories have only ever succeeded in getting those foolish enough to believe them killed.   "A land touched by the gods!? Bah! I'd have to see that with my own eyes to even consider considering it. Besides, even if such a land existed, why in the Nine Hells would the gods want us anywhere near it? We are the forsaken children of the few who tried. Better hidden from our creators than exposed in their shame."
