Boar's Cooks

Career

Qualifications

All Boar's Cooks must know how to safely handle food and be licensed to operate in the open air environment of festival grounds, in accordance with the Republic of Shanai's food and beverage laws and regulations. Extensive knowledge of festival foods, their preparation, and plating is also required. Although not required, it is highly suggested that most seeking the position apprentice under a master Boar Cook during a festival season.

Career Progression

Boar's Cooks are chosen from Fire Mana users who have become masters in the field of culinary arts with high degrees of skill in preparation of festival food for mortals and gods alike, with those skilled in mass quantities being highly sought after. Although not a strict requirement, nearly all Boar Cooks spend years as apprentices to more experienced Boar Cooks and volunteering at festivals, usually preparing the cooking stations, maintaining equipment, or developing recipes of their own.   Highly sought after cooks often are employed season after season, generally rotating between Shanai's different festival venues. Those with excellent reputations and at least 5 years of experience in serving festivals oftentimes are offered prime real-estate for opening their own restaurants and venues on a first come first serve basis, often chosen above others in the field.

Payment & Reimbursement

During all festivals, ceremonies, and feast days, workers in the field are exempt from all other work and duties to the highest order of the law, coming from the fire god themself. Special festival garb is reserved for the cooks in this position, though following the typical style of fire mana in training, are decorated, dyed, and embroidered to the owner's specifications.   Pay during holiday periods when the cooks work directly for the fire god is excellent, most often a single pay period more than enough to allow the cooks to live off of their wages until the next year.

Other Benefits

Boar's cooks are allowed special shopping privileges during the festival season and are allowed to buy rare, expensive, and limited ingredients with few limits at a heavy discount. The discount applies to the rest of the year, but limits on supplies are removed only leading up to an upcoming festival. Cooks are not allowed to use their discounts for those outside of their household and may have it revoked if used, though this is not strictly enforced and frequently overlooked.

Perception

Social Status

Boar's Cooks are well respected by the general public, as are all of those who prepare food for holidays and festivities. In Shanai in particular, Boar's Cooks often own or work in local restaurants and eateries, well known and liked by other locals.

Demographics

Very few advance far enough to earn the rank of a Boar's Cook, with an estimated 70% of those who go through training going on to other food related careers and do not complete their registration. Despite this, those who undergo any period of training for the position are similarly respected for the challenge of such a rigorous program. The vast majority of Boar's Cooks live in or are from the Republic of Shanai or the Pacific.

Operations

Dangers & Hazards

Burns from hot pans and open flames are a common injury sustained from work. Oil burns from fried foods are typically more rare, but still occur. Cuts and scrapes from improper knife handling are often found in apprentices and trainees.
