Tavern Tales

The Aumanite Prohibition of the 1390s

In 1391 Auma sought to enforce their prohibition laws on intoxicating drugs and alcohol in their colonies. This of course caused issue as a great deal of the King's Daughter's income came from alcohol and other items considered to be intoxicating drugs by the Aumanite courts. Their solution for this was to sell high amounts of "coffee" as, while it was considered and intoxicating drug, it was a lesser offense that could be let off with a warning that nobody took seriously. This helped distract law enforcement from the secret selling of drugs and alcohol.

The laws were eventually repealled after the Vixen Party took the majority of the seats in the Aumanite National Congress. Later members of the opposing parties rarely touched on the subject again as prohibition prooved unpopular with voters.

The Hustler of Hassium

As a teen, Jane Bryar would hussle patrons here. Using her supernatural strength, she would armwrestle any willing contestant and collect the winnings from the bets she made. However, because her physical ability is directly linked to her moral standing on her actions, if someone who she believed to be in need went up against her she had no choice but to lose.

Once her dupes started to notice that the richest of strong men whould inevitably lose and that the weakest of widows would always win, she was forced to set up shop somewhere else.

The Metisian Sailors

The Toadmans have always strived to be cordial to all who come through their oaken doors, but there was one night where politness was thrown out the window—along with otherr things.

Henruk had just seated three Metisian sailors who were just new to port when one of the women called him "very beautiful." Though the compliment was a little unusual, he went with it in hopes they'd pay well. The compliments kept coming though and they kept staring at him.

Gertie certainly noticed, but as long as her husband wasn't bothered by it and wasn't flirting back, she decided not to do anything about it and just kept her eye on them from behind the counter. But then they got worse and began to make comments about what he'd look like naked, making Henruk extremely uncomfortable. When he asked them to stop they continued anyway.

Gertie had had enough. She marched right over to their table and said, "I don't know who you three think you are, but it seems your parents never taught you to mind. Now you can either appoligize to my husband or you can get out!.

The sailors made a half-hearted appologie, but didn't stop and the next time Henruk walked by one of them laughed and grabbed his ass. Both he and Gertie wanted them gone. And so Gertie fixed one of them a drink that was sure to scare them off.

When one of them to a drink from the last glass of beer that Henruk brought out, she was met with a mouth full of frog tounge. The sailor threw the glass to the wall behind the bar and Gertie sprung up from the ground, spitting out beer. Leeping over the counter, the Mrs. Toadman readied for a fight.

Cockily the sailors raised their Metisian magic, one weilding water, one weilding rock, and one weilding vine.

Good job. I like the story of Jane Bryar. The story of the Metisian Sailors seems unfinished, unless it is meant to be the start of an adventure. Looking forward to seeing the article when it is finished.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.

Like the Tavern Tales. Would love to hear about the "Honorable Patrons". I like to think the regulars can give the tavern as much personality as the publicans.   All in all, nice article!   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Feel free to check out my Tavern Challenge article if you want to see what I am up to! A nice entry that I'd have loved to see more of. The final tale I'd love to know the ending of one day.

A really neat tavern, I love the owner and his wife, as well as the story with the "coffee"!   I just wonder, has it ever happened, that someone wanted real coffee but instead got something from underneath the counter?

That would be the incident of Mason Coperum, the mayor of Hassium and Minister on Ethics. In a bout of weekeness, he had ordered a coffee, black of course (anything more would be absolutly heretical). Of course the newbie bartender took that to mean plain vodka dyed with inkwell-rose powder to look like coffee. At the sight of the Mayor and ME, Hunruk "accidentally" knocked the cup out of his hand. The mayor was furious and shared his negative oppinion with the towns elites, but at least the whole business didn't get shut down.
