The Wild Wastelands

The Wild Wastelands are a large region of lawlessness with no central authority and few permanent settlements. Petty warlords vie for power against each other in the midst of powerful nonhuman warbands and dangerous monsters.   Squeezed between the border forts of the Eastern Empires and the Borderlands of the Realm, the wastelands defy organization and civilization. The two bastions of civilization maintain a critical trade route through the region, with frequent patrols, watchtowers and garrisons along the route, but these are vulnerable to strategic attacks and can be cut off and annihilated without reinforcements and resupply. Generally the line of the high trade road is the safest, with points north and south becoming increasingly dangerous; Likewise the parts of the road closest to the western and eastern edges are the safest, with the road becoming increasinly dangerous towards its center.   Far north of the road, cities of giants are said to exist; dragons of all kinds have been spotted in elaborate lairs and in the ruins of mouldering cultist temples and necromancer's dark dungeons. Here the yuan-ti might rebuild their empires too, if they could ever take a committed break from killing each other.
