Stockzign Settlement in Tereste | World Anvil

Stockzign (Stock Sign)

The Township of Stockzign is an ancient settlement settled between the Mountain ranges of the Southern Slopes and the Unwelcome Hills. This little valley was named after one of the first Humans to find it, Adolf Stockz. The town started as nothing but a simple hunting and gathering village but Adolf Stockz came up with early agricultural methods that developed the city into a permanent residence.
The town eventually centralized under a hill fort built on the slopes of Mount Descour. Power becoming concentrated into an elective body.   A Council of 9 members vote, see the Council of 9, upon the functions of the town.   The new peoples are united under the cause of expanding the Republic of the Valley across the region

History

Early Years After the foundation of the township of Stockzign great fires roared through the valley destroying much of the ancient forest, known as the Bleeding Forest, the area is still referred to as the bleeding Forest even though much of the land was settled and turned into farmland.   Although the village was mostly self-sufficient they had to rely on tradespeople from the Animalkin villages to the East. Often referred to as the Easterlings. The critical need was access to clay and exotic foods. The Stockzigners traded iron and local produce from the fertile valley.   The first Diety to grace the city was Erathis Goddess of Justice and Civilisation. She blessed her priests with magic and aided in the foundation of her Abbey. A new centre of learning for the peoples of the valley.   The Revolution A period of civil unrest douses the city in fire. The Hill Fort where the wealthy Council of 9 reside is destroyed by a peasant uprising. The council is eventually reformed with its new headquarters being the Abbey of Erathis.   The Revlotionary Reoganization of the Council was blessed by Erathis and the people unanomously require that one position always be given to abbot or abbess of the Abbey.   The church gains significant power in the city. Instituting Apostate Laws and burning symbols and books of foriegn dieties.   A small number of animalkin and halflings move into the city.   The Trade Wars A series of wars and skirmishs begins with the Easterlings. This results in an influx of money and resources to the military of the Church of Erathis. They set up a series of vassal states that funnel materials back to the main town.   A profiteer in the Trade Wars, Henri Bessinger moves into the town and builds a series of infrastructure projects, opens farms, and consolidates many local farmers into the Bessinger Mills a company primarily focused on production of Foodstuffs and Lumber for the region.   Continued expansions in the Trade Wars saw increased territoriesw in the Northern Regions, past the Unwelcome Hills.   A peace treaty is brought about that puts an end to the Trade Wars. This peace treaty sees concessions of the Easterling Vassal States, releasing them and a reduction of arms. This peace allows the now decayed trade routes to slowly return between the two countries.   After the Trade Wars To allow communications across the Republic of the Valley the people of Stockzign built a set of towers across the Unwelcome hills that can be set ablaze in order to warn of incoming attacks of disasters. Smoke signals can be used to send messages across these towers.   Rumors begin to spread of corruption amongst the Church of Erathis this causes the government to put restrictions on the wealth of the Church.   The Wastelands to the Southwest of the town expand and overtake the path leading Westward restricting travel in that direction.   George Bessinger Takes over the Bessinger Mills Company after the passing of his father. He gets elected to the council and becomes a prominent member in society. He petitions the city for a permanent hereditary position on the council and is eventually granted the request. Becoming Prime Minister of Council he improves the city's infrastructure vastly and is often remembered fondly by the town of Stockzign.   The 1st Dragon War George Bessinger begins a series of attacks against the Dragon blessed people of the South. Suggesting that increased coastal control will benefit the prosperity of the People of the Republic of the Valley. The successful wars also bring refugee Dragonborn into the Region.   In an effort to further relations with the new Dragonborn population George Bessinger III, great grandson of George Bessinger begins a social housing program for refugees, the poor, and those displaced by disasters in the region.   The 2nd Dragon War The Peoples of the East and the Dragonborn houses of the Southwest unite to assault the city of Stockzign. This results in the pillaging and destruction of many homes. The armies of the Abbey of Erathis are all but wiped out when Abbess Marizia Shulstien signs an agreement that ends the war with significant losses if territory in the East but, allowing the forces of the republic to push back the Dragonborn.   In retaliation to the war many villagers attack the Dragonborn refugee camps and criticize the church's view that they are of equal value many fall away from the core values of Erathis and the church loses much of its former power over the community. The Bessinger Family quickly swoops in and fills the void left by the church.   The Dragonborn refugees headed by Jean Desparte lead a failed coup attempt and this results in many cassualties in the streets. This bloody day known as the Night of Scales is remembered yearly with a burning of an effigy of Jean Desparte. Relations between the Dragonborn houses and the Republic become dismal.   Bessinger Park is constructed, a vast area of greens and artificial lakes that brings the wealthy of Stockzign together.   The Present A major fire burned down the Abbey of Erathis and much of the surrounding homes.   With the death of a prominent businessman in the city a large sum of wealth is given up to the Council due to him having no familial ties. This sum of wealth is used to create a stronger armed force for the city in anticipation for conflicts westward.

Defences

Stockzign has no walls persay but it does have an inner Castle and a series of small fortifications to prevent the attacks on the city. The old city was located at the Fort to the South but that has been almost entirely neglected.
