First Draft [Warning : SPOILERS]

At the beginning, the story is only about Lyra, a young witch who has just graduated from the High Academy of Magic, in the Capitol. she has specialised in Enchanted Craft (the act of creating objects that can use magic, even if the user has no training ni magic) and Archeology. As such, she has all the tools and knowledge to study ancient relics.   She settled in Torsgard with two goals in mind. The first one is to make a living of her craft in a quiet village, far from the constant buzzing of the Capitol. The second is to study the ruins in the region of Hornsegl.   This region is known to be wild, many legends use it as "the place where evil come from". If there were a place on the map stamped "Here Be Dragons", it would be Hornsegl. No one study this place, yet everyone have heard its name at least once.   10 years ago, when Lyra had learn that Hornsegl is a real place, and not just a fairytale land, she decided to go explore it. She is certain that she will find historical pieces there, which is why she has specialised in Archeology.   First chapters will focus on her settlement and first exploration of the region. There is a "safe zone" around the village, a perimeter known by the villagers, where they can hunt and farm. But no one will ever go farther than The Edge. Lyra starts of by following the hunters to discover the region. She looks for evidences of ruins, but find none. She then decide to go over The Edge. After getting ready, she goes exploring. During the first months, she finds nothing about ruins. She finds new plants and animals, new materials to study and to send to her colleagues specialized in Material Magic back at the Academy, but no trace of civilisation. But she keeps going. She is usefull in the village, she helps people by crafting magical tools so everyone likes her. (Except the few elders who thinks she will bring desolation on the land by going over The Edge), she's very appreciated at the Academy for all the new material she finds, so her studies are well paid, but most importantly, she can feel she's close to something important. She can feel the magic like no other, and she feels that there is something there. There is a different source of magic, something that doesn't feel quite right. But it's very dim, diffused. Try as she might, she cannot pin point the source of this feeling. So she keeps on looking.   After months of research, she finally find something. The ruins of a small house. It's overrun by plants, a tree has fully grown in the center and a river now flows through the main room. But what a discovery. It is totaly alien. The architecture, the pots and furniture that has survived, and even a small statue, everything comes from a different civilisation. It looks like nothing she has ever seen or studied.   She spends the next weeks studying the place, gathering as much as she can find, trying to make sense of what she finds. She's looking for something very specific : bones, or representations of the inhabitants. But this time, she doesn't tell the Academy. Because this is personal. You see, Lyra isn't exactly human. She's born with small horns, fangs and claws. She has a short tail and pointy ears, she has scales on her shoulders, hips and cheekbones. And she can use a kind of magic that no one else can use. She has learn very soon to use glamour to hide her unnatural features. Her dad is human, he raised her away from civilisation until she became able to use glamours. All she knows about her mom is what he told her : She was a great witch, but couldn't conceive. They tried for years in vain. One day, she came home with a mysterious potion. She drank it, and became pregnant on first try. Bu the pregnancy had drained her so much that she died minutes after Lyra was born. Her dad decided to raise her with all his love despite her clearly non-human figure. He protected her, teached her everything he could, and told her every fairy tale he knew. Lyra has always wondered what she is and what was this potion that created her and killed her mom. She is certain that the answer is in Hornsegl.   Months pass again as she keep on searching. Until she finds. Behind huge rocks clearly placed here on intent, inside a cave with warnings painted on the walls, deep inside the bowels of the hearth : a whole temple magically sealed.   Once the seal is broken, Lyra enter in an old building. It is clearly a place of cult, but nothing she has ever seen. The different source of magic is clearly here now, she can feel it precisely. There are signs of war. Destruction, impacts of spell and weapons, blood long dried out, and corpses. Lots of humans, but also something else. Humanoïds, with huge horns and long tails. At the deepest core of the temple, where magic is pulsating like a heartbeatThere is a second seal. In it, a demon stand, floating in mid air, seemingly frozen in time in a bubble of stasis. A huge sword runs through its chest, some blood is floating around the wound. the demon's body is covered by a glowing tattoo. After a few weeks of research, Lyra comes to the conclusion that the tattoo is an emergency statis armor. If the wearer is grievly wounded, the tattoo fires up and create a bubble around its wearer, effectively freezing it in time until a medic can come with the right equipment to unlock the stasis and save the victim. Problem is, it seems that the medics are all dead, or gone. Unable to destroy the bubble, the attackers have chosen to seal the demon away. and to curse the whole valley to ensure that no one will ever try to save it.   Lyra decide to save it. It's risky, but after studying the all temple she saw no evidence of hatred or violence in their cult. This "demon" is her only chance to understand what happened and what she is. But she's going to need the help of Finn.   Finn is one of the villager who hated Lyra. And for a good reason : He's a Black-Blood. He has no ability to magic, worse than that, his touch can deactivate magical items, his presence deviates the streams of magic around him, and he is totally immune to any kind of magic. He is totally immune to Lyra's Glamour. Lucky for Lyra, everyone think Finn's crazy. Beside, after more than a year of living the village and helping everyone, Lyra has earned everyone's trust. Now Finn doesn't want her dead, he just wants her far. Lyra has to convince him to help her : only he can remove the sword from the demon's chest and touch it without breaking the bubble stasis. If they want any chance to save the humanoïd, they will need to sew it back while still frozen.     //MISC NOTES: Things to work on :
  • What is the name of the "demon" race ?
  • What happened to the others ?
  • Just, what happened ?
  • What next ?
  • Ideas :
  • the other race is still alive somewhere
  • happy ending where the two races lives in harmony ?
