Soul Crystal

Echo's tongue poked from her mouth in concentration as she bent over the circuit board she was soldering. Every so often glancing over at the softly pulsing latticework crystal which sat in it's mount on the workstation a couple feet away. She could almost feel the energy pulsing from it, it had blown two of her sytems so far, but she was determined to figure out what this thing was.

Dragon Souls

Dragons can exist for millenia, and are intrepid explorers. Every so often they either outlive their bodies or decide to sleep for extended periods of time, to allow the universe to progress a little. When this happens, the dragon's "soul energy" condenses down into a crystal, and they go into a type of semi aware stasis. To those who have no knowledge of the Dragon's these crystals will seem extremely valuable as they hold vast amounts of compressed energy. That's if they are able to extract it, of course.

A frustrating puzzle

The only one of these Crystals known to have been studied, turned out to be indestructible. No instrument or process anyone tried seemed to make even a scratch in it's surface. Any attempts to scan the crystal returned incomprehensible or impossible results, hooking it up to instrumentation and systems usually resulted in the destruction of said equipment. The Crystal even lashed out violently with a burst of energy at one point, killing 3 scientists and two guards. Although, the item is called a crystal this does not acurately describe what the Dragon Soul actually is. Although crystalline in shape, It is actually from a completely unknown substance, this much it's examiners managed to figure out.
