Beomarion

Purpose / Function

To provide a safe location for the sick and wounded to heal.

Alterations

When Akilases decided to renovate the crumbling temple, its roof had all but disappeared along with most of the inner sanctum. After securing generous donations from wealthy patrons and supporters, the physician rebuilt the temple and dedicated it to Beomaro. He reused the columns from the old temple but decorated the capitals with elaborate plant motifs. Within weeks of completing the temple, he ordered the construction of living quarters and wards to house invalids and the sick. He hired and purchased staff, purchased supplies, and treated his first patients not long after that.

Architecture

What became the Beomarion emerged from the remains of an ancient temple constructed soon after the first Diakai settlers arrived on Naremius. Its deity has long been forgotten. The ruins sat forgotten on the imposing hill, crumbling over time. The early Diakai seafarers preferred simpler column designs and smaller interior spaces. Akilases build larger and grander, adorning the temples with rich frescoes depicting stories involving Beomaro. Lavish mosaics lined the floor, and the cella’s cult statue stood three times taller than a man.

History

The Beomarion was the largest hospital in the known world for more than a century. It was one of several facilities named after the Diakai god Beomaro, the god of medicine, the arts, and vegetation. Its proprietor, Akilases, was a physician of great renown. He studied with the world’s greatest minds at the Library of Edaros as a young man. After apprenticing under Kalikenis, the most famous physician of his day, he treated aristocratic clientele all around the Insular Sea. He was fond of treating local peoples’ ailments at reduced or no cost while also accepting travelers from hundreds of miles away. The Beomarion of Naremius lasted no more than ten years before a fire engulfed the structure under mysterious circumstances. Akilases vanished and was presumed dead.
