Tenebrosus

Created by

This world is an attempt to create a thoughtful, well developed medieval fantasy world, with three clear points of distinction from our own. Each aspect of Tenebrosus is intended to be as plausible as possible, given the presence of those points of distinction.     #1. Tenebrosus is a world on a tidally locked planet. Unlike our own planet, one side of this world is exposed to the light of its star (Which is a Sol analogue called Selt), and is unbearable hot and arid, the other is in perpetual darkness, and is frozen. The moon (Shile) behaves roughly the same as our own, and thus the dark side of the planet has moonlight about half the time. The portion where the dark and light side meet is the only part of Tenebrosus that is habitable, and due to planetary wobble, there is a day and night there, but the further you get from the edge, the shorter the day/night is, depending on which direction you are going.     #2. There are 9 gods. These gods are very real, and are likely the remains of a much earlier civilization. None of them are omnipotent, and they vary a lot in how involved they are. 4 are aligned with the peoples on the dark side of the border, and 4 with the light. The ninth is... complicated.     #3. There are two types of being on Tenebrosus, due to life evolving in two separate ways. The first is essentially the same as earth life, it is called Vigis when it is referred too, but it is considered the default state, so most people don't use the word. The second is called Elaan, and it is immortal, and adapts by transferring its gestalt to different forms. There is a finite (but substantial) amount of Elaan in the world, and more powerful and intelligent forms use more of it. So if you kill a very powerful Elaan, it might reform into dozens, or even thousands of animal like entities. Elaan typically inhabit non-organic forms, like stone, mud, water, and so forth, in which they act like "Elementals" in other worlds. They can however by convinced by certain people to occupy organic forms, like Wood or corpses, but they never do so by choice.     There is no "Magic" in Tenebrosus that is not related to either #2 or #3, and in both cases it is not exactly magic, but natural forces that allow those two to exist, and are thus unknown or nonexistent on our world.
