Session 25: Consequences and Runaways
General Summary
Ronin found himself the property of the Guild of the Nine Stars. Having been "sold" by his friends into the guild's possession, he spent the majority of his first 12 hours as a "robot butler" in service of the Guildmaster, Dorian. He followed Dorian to various business meetings, served him tea, and ultimately sat still through an awkward conversation on Dorian's part about the corruptibility of humans and the fact all of Ronin belonged to him now. After this odd encounter, Ronin was taken to the guild's vault of magic items where he was locked away in total darkness.
Unfortunately for the heist, Ronin did not have darkvision, so he found himself stumbling around in the dark, trying to grab items as he could. He ended up snagging a few items, only to set off an alarm spell and alert the guards to his presence -- or rather his sentience. He just barely managed to hide in an upper corner of the room before the vault door opened and 4 guards flooded in. Quickly, he darted for the exit, beginning his escape. He rushed past the figure of Dorian in the hallway, but found himself cut up nastily from seemingly nowhere. Beyond that, while he felt secure in his speed to escape, as he reached the stairway he felt a tug on his cloak; Dorian was right behind him, floating in the air!
Breaking his way through a few series of guards and thrown flames from Dorian, Ronin barely made his way into the streets of New Town, successfully hiding in an alley and sowing panic in the masses enough to sneak away unnoticed through the sewers...
Meanwhile, just finishing their burial of fallen teammate Rolen Sha-tae, the rest of the party sat in a camp set up just south of town. After a quick story of happier days from Elrohir Battlebard, the thumping of rapidly approaching hooves alerted them to the arrival of Ronin (alongside Gregory Blakhuv, who served in this case as a getaway driver of sorts). Without missing a beat, the party loaded up their wagon and hurried south at the fastest speed possible without being obvious about their desire to put distance between themselves and The Twin Cities.
In a animal-shaped scouting excursion, Gregory informed the party of a large band of guild guards approaching from the direction of the city; at their current pace, the group would be overrun in the hour. The party instead decided to make up camp, hiding Ronin invisibly outside its circle. When the guards approached, helmed by Quinten the Gilded-Hand, the party began the long process of talking their way out their predicament. Elrohir vestured himself in the role of the group's lawyer and Medran Emberborn resumed his persona of "Speter." Between the two of them, they valiantly argued their case that the party had not broken any portion of their contract with the Guild of the Nine Stars. Quinten, enraged but unsure how much the party was involved in Ronin's escape, offered an ultimatum: let him use a Scroll of Locate Object on an item stolen by Ronin or come back to New Town for questioning. The party obliged, unsure how this would play out.
5 guards, Quinten, and Elrohir went off in pursuit of Ronin, while the rest of the camp stayed back surrounded by 10 guards themselves. In what proved to be a chaotic few minutes, Ronin knocked out Quinten, he and Elrohir fought off the 5 guards (who proved to be Bearded Devils), while the rest of the party created panic among the rest of the hired swords back at camp, sending them off into the night in a flurry of fear. The party regrouped, threatened Quinten, stole his golden hand, melted it down, replaced it with a wooden arm, and sent him back to town in a fear-ridden heap.
In the midst of it all, Davrilindil Lantandal woke up, bound in the back of the party's wagon. While at first reticent to talk, Elrohir and Gregory gleaned some generic, mysterious information from him related to Elrohir's parentage, in part thanks to a Detect Thoughts spell by Elrohir.
Meanwhile, as Medran slept, he dreamed a strange dream again involving Benjals. His former zombified companion again reached out to him, this time managing to gargle out the word "Power." Medran reached out and grabbed his hand. He felt a shiver of energy enter him and awoke with a dark satisfaction...
