The White God

A being that lives in the barony of Endelmarch . When the Empire replaced the folk religions of the uncivilised lands with the polytheistic pantheon, an immense pale creature arose from the earth and ravaged Imperial citizens to the exclusion of all other life. The White God was not defeated by the Empire, instead the incident was kept confidential, and the people of modern-day Endelmarch were permitted to pay tribute to the creature so long as its worship did not spread beyond the walls of the fortress that was then Endelmarch. People who live in Endelmarch say the White God yet exists, and many of the villagers make the dangerous journey through the Darkwood to the God's home on the summer equinox. Archaeologists have long longed to see the White God, but it will not show itself to outsiders. Villagers of Endelmarch are selected to ensure no trespassers attend the ritual celebrations and yearly devotions to the ancient spirit.

Outside of dusty tomes, the truth of the White God is practically unknown in beyond the barony of Endelmarch. Within Endelmarch, however, The White God is an important part of daily life. The White God has the power to protect and destroy, and to ensure a bountiful or bare harvest. Those hoping for offspring or respite from illness beg the God for its favour. There is no solid account of the bounds of the White God's power. Folk tales and records dating back to the Morbhaine Empire indicate its purview is wide, its powers bound only by its whim.

The White God is said to live beneath the hills to the west of Endelmarch beyond the Darkwood in a vast cave. Due to its importance and the mystery surrounding it, the White God has featured in numerous local stories, serving a variety of narrative purposes.

The White God as a Punisher

The White God punished the hubris of Imperials, but parents have long used the God to frighten headstrong children into cooperation. Children who willfully disobey adults will find themselves taken by the God for seven years, during which they will hang upside down from the ceiling of the White God's cavernous home.

The White God as an Avatar of Justice

The White God punished the hubris of the Empire, but only because of their injustices. It cared not for ritual or tradition, only justice.

The White God as a Force of Nature

The White God was acting on impulse, and the records of its prejudicial killings are erroneous or the result of chance.
