Justiciar Lianranne dashed down the street toward her quarry, unhindered by the armor and clunky equipment most of her comrades used. It was next to sickening how many people sought to take advantage of the good people of Ultanis. Her target, a seemingly simple man in simple clothes, ran ahead of her with a trio of coin purses. He'd ran as soon as she noticed him pickpocketing.
The man turned into an alleyway between two buildings, and Lianranne grinned. This may be easier than she'd expected. She ran into the alleyway and grabbed hold of the man's leg as he attempted to clear the high bricked wall of the building at the other end of the alleyway. She yanked him down to the ground, leveling her rapier at the thief's face.
"In the name of the Justiciars of Ultanis, return what you stole and there will be no further violence," she said, weaving a bit of magic into her words.
The man, noticeably unarmed, complied, and Lianranne grinned again. Justice was easy with magic on its side.
In Ultanis, the Celestial Fields, all aasimar and divine small folk have the opportunity to become Justicars, keepers of peace and justice. Charged with the protection of the nation while the titan angels combat the demons and devils bordering Ultanis, these people become a beacon of light and hope for the small folk in the nation.
To become a Justiciar, an aasimar must have accomplished multiple trials known as the "Three Acts" to prove their goodness and justice. They must have performed an act of chairty to another at a sacrifice to themselves, usually to one less fortunate than themselves. They must have defeated or brought down some sort of evil (devls and demons are often preferred). Finally, they must take action to uphold the law, although only in Ultanis itself.
As soon as the Three Acts are completed, an oath is taken to become a fully fledged Justiciar. These oaths are variable, often synonymous with the common lawful paladin oaths, although the Justiciar does not need to be a paladin to gain the title. One of the most common oaths taken is the Oath of The Crown, althouh there is room for most paladin oaths to be taken instead. The taken oath determines the role of the Justiciar in Ultanian society.
