The Brine's Welcome

Out here... People around you are what'cha get

So best treat them with respect! As monstrous and traitorous as the "Knavefolk" are often depicted by the organized world, they might be pirates but they are pirates with hearts of gold. With no allies outside of their islands of Ribbon Archipelago and even those islands laid under siege from time to time, getting new non-local members to join the Knaves is a rarity, but does happen occasionally. These new people are treated like kings, at least once they find their footing from the mismatched order of Redbelly Port.

The Brine's Welcome

The Brine's Welcome is a dish filled with salty goods of the Lavish Sea. Often a dish with several fried mackarels, roasted seaweeds and oysters as desert, the dish cannot go down without a proper ale or a large bucket of water. Regardless of what the dish holds as it might change from one dish to another, it is adorned with a boiled, shut clam on top of the dish. It is said, that only those who have truly found their new family and who are going to have a prosperous future in the Port will find a pearl from inside of the clam. When someone eats the Brine's Welcome, they have truly become an active part of the community in Redbelly Port and are cherished for being there.
Lucky you!
It is a light-hearted, kind gesture for the locals to keep it a secret that in fact every new resident who earns their place among the Knavefolk receives a lustrous pearl from the clam. This is a secret only slowly realized after living in the Port for years and preparing this dish for another.

The Proving

In order for one to prove themselves a true member of the community, it is rumored that they must consume flesh or kill a sailor from one of the trading vessels passing through or around Cauldron of Creation. As most things associated with the Knavefolk, this is untrue. The Brine's Welcome is most easily earned by becoming a member of a Ship and getting acknowledged by a Captain, but many individuals have earned their places through hard work and labor for the betterment of the community: teachers, entertainers, artisans have achiveded their citizenship by making the community a better place than it was when they arrived to it.

I love how wholesome this is! The rumours about having to EAT PEOPLE at the end is a lovely twisted addition, too xD

There's something so sweet about the clam secret, knowing that the locals are so eager to welcome their newest residents and set them up with a positive outlook. Even if the secret gets out later on, it must be nice to know your new family wanted you to feel at home with them from the very beginning :)
