Taur-en-Gwaedh - The great forest

Created by

This is just notes for now:   General description: Great forest stretching from the equator to where it gives way to arboreal tundra. Bordered by coastlines to the east (globe has same rotation as the earth), a large coastal mountainrange to the west, ice and tundra to the south and a savanna that quickly turns into desert to the north. The continent is one of the two largest on the planet, together with it's sibling continent to the east (they are connected in the icy south).   People: Most common inhabitants are elves and orcs, with the elves dominating the treetops and the orcs living mostly as migrating tribes of hunters on the forest floor. There are a few human tribes that have made themselves useful enough for the orcs to accept them in the interior, but otherwise humans are only found close to the coastal cities in the east.   Elementals, fae and spiritfolk are also inhabit the forest, but most of them don't live in large settlements.   Classes: This section might be replaced or scrapped as I am considering abandoning 5ed d&d or d&d entierly as magic is just waaaay to common and mundane in d&d for my taste. I like magical elements, and the forest should contain more magic than the surrounding world, but even in the great forest magic should never be free. I want magic that is often in the form of rituals or with material, spiritual, mental or physical costs. I am ok with magic abilities being given to people in exchange for pledges to gods and ancient powers, but breaking any part of that pledge should hurt, not just by locking the user from their source until atoned.   Regular warlocks are banned in the forest by the ritualists, as only compacts with the forests and it's spirits are allowed. Rangers and druids are very common. Rogues occur but usually lean towards wilderness skills similar to rangers, as few large cities exist. Paladins, Monks and Clerics exist, but almost exclusively aligned with the gods and primordials connected to the forest. Fighters and bards are fairly common. Barbarians are common, but mostly among the Orcs. Wizards are decently common among the moon elves, less so among other races. Sorcerers are fairly common, but mostly with origins in the forests primordial energies.   Open conflicts: The Ritualist, who are firm in upholding the compacts with the forest, are in conflict with the Naturalists who believe the natural energies of the forest should not be aided or constrained, but instead have it's course for good or ill.   History: In the last century the presence of human traders has increased significantly in the coastal cities, and in [city] on [big island] they actually outnumber the native elves and orcs for the first time in history. 200 years ago only a few adventurous human traders ever reached the [bay] to gawp at it's wonder, now several ships often arrive each week.   Ancient history is only known by the elves, but there are legend of a time before the Compact and the great forest. Some say this was a time of great conflict and strife, other that humans actually where abundant on the continent in that time, still others say it was a glorious time of freedom and prosperity.   Etymology: Taur-en-gwaedh means Forest of the Compact in Sindarin.
