Nissayrian Badlands

It's not that bad...

Banner by Terry-Lynn L!
The Nissayrian Badlands are a huge expanse of mostly uninhabited terrain in the western portion of the country of Nissayria. The Nissayrians, esseni native to the land, live entirely in the eastern portion of the country in the scrublands, as well as the outlying islands in areas less prone to volcanic activity.   The Badlands are known to be inhospitable. Not only is rainfall rare in this location, air temperatures rarely drop to anything that an esseni would be comfortable living in day to day. Though the heat is dry, it has been known to rise to temperatures that will cause heat stroke in a matter of minutes. Esseni may visit the badlands to gawk at the natural beauty of the area, but only fools will stay there overnight.

Geography

The Badlands are a large expanse of buttes, pinnacles, and grassy plains that receive little water throughout the year. The Badlands are often referred to as The Sanguine Expanse, due to the blood-red color of the iron rich clay and sands that make up the ground. Despite its inhospitable nature, the Badlands are seen as one of the most beautiful locations in Nissayria. Many of the buttes show obviously layered topography in different shades of reds and browns.

Fauna & Flora

The most industrious and well known species in the Badlands is the Sangina, dragons aligned with the element of lightning or electricity. Sangina are incredibly fast, and have modified the landscape and created cavernous homes in the sides of buttes. These carved cities are rare to be seen by non-Sangina as these dragons are particularly well isolated.   Other species include ruminants (some domesticated by the Sangina), various species of lizards and birds, as well as insects.   The flora of the area is mostly species that can survive easily in low water environments.
