Fonons

We believed that it was fierce passion that fueled our resolve for great things, but secretly we've had a helping hand all along. Fonons.

History

Fonons are a hidden particle comprised of vibrations of stored energy that is believed to connect and joins other universal building blocks together. After careful observation and experimentation, it was discovered that large quantities of Fonons and careful manipulation produce enough energy to create strange phenomena of different uses and potency. Once established as a worldly fact, this use of Fonon energy was named Magic, and the first wizards of the world were born.

Even when the process was well documented, producing any magical effects was extremely difficult, and required careful study and practice to pull enough energy to produce the desired effect. Some practitioners of this new science found ways to store the energy into objects, creating the first magical items and artifacts. However, due to the infancy of the technology and difficulty to harness enough Fonons to create these items, by modern standards, even the most impressive artifacts were weak at the time.

As think tanks of different countries continued to push the limits of Fonons, many came to the same conclusion: while this energy has seemingly endless potential, it was nigh impossible to be able to harness enough of it to produce effects greater than was already discovered and in use. Just as many would give up on advancing magic further, Tariel shook with astronomical force.

The Spark

In the single greatest cosmic event of documented history, Tariel was hit by a massive shockwave of unknown origin, causing a world wide earthquake of unmeasurable power. A crackling static, and in the wake of near catastrophic destruction, every particle of fonon sparked with newborn light of five different colors, each dancing with life and energy.

While the purpose of Fonons stayed largely the same, a dormant power inside of them was unlocked, increasing the energy output tenfold. The possible theories and uses of this energy was once again reality. Greater concentrations of Fonons were now possible, and the power and energy in each individual fonon was so great, that they now hung in the air and atmosphere in excess. As the civilizations of the world repaired the damage caused by this event, the race to utilize this newborn power began. With seemingly endless new applications, discovering and documenting the now new nature of Fonons became a worldly priority, and Tariel faced the largest technology boom ever seen.

Fields of Fonons

When enough fonons of one color are gathered, they now stick to the nearest physical flat surface, creating a distinct frequency of sound as a 15 by 15 foot circle forms. This phenomena is called a Field of Fonons, or FoF in shorthand. In modern times, this is a byproduct of most spells, as the power generated is now much greater than the required energy needed for spells. This circle has two forms: a 50% power circle that first appears after a spell is cast, and a 100% power circle where two same color 50% spells cast within 20ft of each other combine into one. In the presence of a 100% power FoF circle, a trained individual can absorb these fonons into their bodies for various effects. With the large amount of excess Fonons in the air and atmosphere, another new phenomena was discovered. When extreme excesses of Fonons gather for a long period of time, they compress into a physical geode now called a Fonstone. These fonstones harness so much energy, that they can be used as a power source. Because of the nature of the fonons in the atmosphere, this created a new planetary ring in its orbit, named the Fonbelt.

Colors of Fonons

  • Red - Red is known to be naturally occurring in places of heat. It is also known as the fastest fonon, as heat generates the most kinetic energy, which increases the output of power and speed. It is commonly present in spells of destruction and elements of fire and earth.
  • Blue - Blue is known to be naturally occurring in places of cold. A counterpart to red, it is known as the slowest fonon, as it’s ability to sap heat decreases kinetic energy, and therefore decreases the output of power and speed. It is commonly present in spells of non-natural creation.
  • Green - Green is known to be naturally occurring in places filled with nature. It is known as a fonon that promotes growth, both natural and unnatural. It is commonly present in natural weapons, including manipulation of creatures and poisons.
  • Yellow - Being more uncommon, little is known about Yellow Fonons in their natural state, and it is extremely hard to manipulate. However they have the unique property of being able to restore other elements to their original state, providing healing and even resurrection.
  • Black - Like Yellow, is more uncommon and little is known about where they naturally occur. They have the unique property of being able to manipulate beings who are otherwise beyond the help of common fonons, even bringing them back to a state of unlife.

A New Age

Many different individuals found new and unique ways to use Fonons for their different crafts and ambitions:

  • Wizards, Eldritch Knights, and Arcane Tricksters still used the original traditional method of spellcasting. To manipulate the fonons into a particular combination to achieve their spells, they have the greatest range of spell effects, at the cost of still requiring careful study and difficulty to achieve.
  • Clerics, Warlocks, and Paladins relied on knowledge from beings greater than them, their spells coming from devotion and guidance of the greater power. This method requires the least overall knowledge.
  •
  • Druids, Rangers, Monks learn to harness the fonons naturally occuring in the air, achieving their desired spells without having to change the fonons. These methods are taught through ancient teachings of the Old Gods, but are now much more potent and effective.
  •
  • Bards use their knowledge of frequencies to harmonize with fonons, and are able to use their energy in the purest form.
  •
  • Sorcerers have potent fonons sealed inside their body, an ancient ritual of sealing powerful sources of power that existed before The Spark. When these fonons were awakened, it gave those living hosts unbelievable power, and Sorcerers must learn how to better harness their given power over time.
  •
  • Fonists are a secret practitioner of magic that is largely unknown. Some individuals were born with the ability to see and hear Fonons in ways others cannot. Over time, Fonists can learn to communicate with and thus learn hidden truths of Fonons, befriending them in a form of symbiosis. How exactly this is done is not known.

Secret Desires

With few exceptions, all of Tariel currently is blind to the true nature of Fonons after their awakening. Each color not only has specific elements and properties, but is also attracted to people with matching desires and ambitions. An invisible, thin aura of fonons gathers around a person, the colors of this aura revealing what the individual truly wants, and their presence helps drive them to their goals. Only Fonists, rare individuals born with a special connection to Fonons can see this aura, and as they learn the true nature of them, can use this information as additional insight towards people's goals and actions. Fonons are so attracted to pure, raw desire that it can cause them to act, causing great feats and the awakening of new artifacts that cannot otherwise be easily made. While there are many rumors and stories of these events occuring, many of them are written off as myths or deception by other parties, as in this new age information on how fonons work is still incomplete, and the acts are almost impossible to replicate.

RPG Effects

During your turn, you can absorb a 100% power FoF you are touching as a free action. Once you do so, you can use one of the following two abilities:   You can add 1d10 damage dice of the type corresponding in the Field of Fonons Damage Dice Chart below to a melee or ranged attack you make.   You can cast a spell of the corresponding fonon color in the Field of Fonons Generation Chart for one level of spell slot less, or cast it as if it was one spell slot higher.
