Tidal Pass

In the northeast lies the coveted land of the Spice Islands. However getting to the resources there has been a challenge to those in the rest of the world.   Aggressive nomadic horsemen as well as the magical wind climate prevents safe passage through the north. Efforts to build a rail system through any of this area by Eprela has been stopped by raids of the Ert Horsemen and a nearby group loyal to the Druids. Port cities along the Dantric Sea are forced to be kept small and primitive by the druids.   The Fire Elves control the river passage through the south and extort traders with high tariffs. Past the Fire Elf influence are more barbaric jungle tribes, requiring significant armed guards to keep the caravans safe. While trade is possible all year the dangers and costs keep spices rare.   The middle is a different story. For if you are brave and wise with a good sense of timing you can attempt to use the Tidal Pass. During the winter the pass is covered in shallow water, allowing small and light ships to pass through and is the peak trading season. However during the spring, summer, and autumn months the water becomes shallow or non-existent. The land isn't safe to tread on foot though. Quicksand, sinkholes, sand worms, mud, the undead, ghosts of travelers past, fire spouts, and water surges haunt any who attempt to cross on foot. Attempts to map out safe areas have failed due to the ever shifting sands of Tidal Pass.   The only group of people who seem to be able to travel safely through the Tidal Pass regardless of conditions are the Rike Mystics.
