Magitech

The melding of industry and magic

Magitech is the process of using a Power Stone (or Blood Stones) to create magic items. Magical versions of mundane items, such as a flaming sword or a ring that protects against the cold, are relatively common. More fantastical items that couldn't exist otherwise are also possible, most notably the Portable Steam Engine and Cybernetics. Magitech works on the principle that magic requires a "personality" to function. Power stones act as a catalyst to unlock the innate magical potential of an object.   There are two main varieties of magitech based on their source; power stones and blood stones. Power Stone magitech requires a Runesmith to assist in the creation. Power stone based magitech offers the least magical utility and options. An object created to use a power stone could have a blood stone substituted in. Blood Stone based magitech uses the personalization of the blood stone to channel magical power through the object. As a result, blood stone magitech is easier to manufacture but requires the more expensive blood stone to function, as well as an opportunity cost to the user as they can only use a single blood stone based object at a time.   To use a magitech item a wearer must have skin contact to activate the object, much like a power stone. Gold thread can be used as a conductor for up to 2 meters. People who use magitech often will buy gloves or other appropriate clothing with gold thread woven into the contact points. If the magitech in question is attuned with a bloodstone physical contact is not required, the person with the attunement only needs to will the actions of the bloodstone.   To create a magitech item, an artificer will begin work on the object using plans created by an artificer of master rank or higher. This process may involve blacksmiths, carpenters, goldsmiths, jewelers, tailors, or whatever profession is related to a non-magical version. After the base item is created the artificer will work with a runesmith who will create the runes that allow the "personality" of the power stone and "name" of the item created to work together. More runes are added for the desired magical effects. An item may have multiple power stones in it, but each subsequent power stone will make the required runes progressively more complex and difficult.   The creation of a magitech item designed for blood stones is much simpler, requiring only a single rune "blood stone" for the personality aspect and allowing much more generic name runes for the item. A blood stone magitech device only functions for its bonded user. Whenever someone else tries to use such a device it will fail as the personalities of the blood stone and the user clash. This can be a flaming sword turning into a mundane weapon, a vehicle's engine shutting down, or the joints of magitech armor seizing.   If a power stone in a magitech item is damaged or destroyed the item will cease functioning. A skilled runesmith can replace the power stone, though doing so will require replacing or modifying the existing runes.   Magitech is different from a magic item. Magic items are typically created through supernatural means, a ritual, or an epic deed or tale. Magitech is created through a manufacturing process. While magitech is usually expensive, some are more readily available, ensuring that everyone has seen bits and pieces here and there, even if they're too poor to own some themselves.
