Esqualine quarter
Located in the west of Cardena the Esqualine is famous for its horses. Home to the hippodrome, people from all over the empire would come here to race, trade, and breed horses. It is now home to some of the greatest stables in the world, as well as a great many other entertainments that grew up as side shows to the races. Along with horses the district also acted as a hub for those coming to trade food, farmers hunters, and merchants.

Industry & Trade
Horses, food and livestock
Infrastructure
The predominant feature is the hippodrome, but there are numerous stables (including the imperial cavalry stables) , blacksmiths, farriers, cartwrights, and other craftsmen whose trade relates to horses and transport. There are also many warehouses that deal in food storage, livestock markets, and an above average number of butchers to process the fresh meat as it enters the city. There is a hunters lodge dating back a couple mof centuries, and the temples to Janus and Demeter can also be found here.
History
Once this area lay beyond the city walls, and the hippodrome drew huge crowrd that came to watch races. The rich used this as an opportunity to buy and sell horses, the poor traded food and livestock. permanent markets slowly arose, along with taverns to keep the crowds fed and to provide beds to those who had travelled from afar. In time as more buildings arose the area was absorbed into the city and a wall built around it.
Architecture
The street layout in this sector is haphazard at best, though the streets to tend to be broader than most. Housing tends to be a little sloppy and slightly rustic in tone, but there are a few villas dating back from when it was all fields. It features some of the best and some of the worst taverns in the city.
Geography
Unlike other quarters most of the Esqualine is not built on a hill. That said there is a hill, referred to as the esqaline, that overlooks the hippodrome and houses many of the old villas.
