Xenolia Malefactoris Venolia Umbra, more commonly Umbras or Venolia Umbras, are an endemic specie of Pandora ( one of saturn moon )
The species while prodigiously aggressive is an important part of the space age as much for its cultural impact than for its scientific importance.

Scientific impact

Umbras are able to manipulate Quantum Field Theta while existence of QTF was theorised since early Space Age (around Sol 230) evidence of a real use of it was a major push for Quantum Field Manipulation and Quantum containment.

Popular Culture impact

After the massive trauma that was the "Heaven Curse" rV843, many where anxious about the prospect of aliens races and extra terrestrial life.
While colinisation of Mars and Ceres where effective and cost nearly no human lives, the sentiment stayed and most people where less than eager to see if humanity was indeed alone. Spherical in shape the outside of the sphere seem to be made of hard shell material, probably a kind of chitin, wich appear to have tensil strenght at least equivalent to steel.
Interior structure unknown.

Pandora is inhabited, i repeat we have positiveid on organic life on Pandora.
The thing is a strange goo. it's blue and a bit translucent, it's react to sound, pressure wave and it seem to perform so kind of photosynthesis.

Since dr aldberg have set in a dish and saturated it with sugar, the thing as expanded to a colony covering the whole dish on a good centimeter deep.
We are resolute to keep it alive, even if we are unsure of it's property.
Living on the surface seem to make it metabolise a bit faster probably due to decreased pressure compared to it's natural environnement (around 540 meters under surface as per sample taken).

The thing as emited a short cycle heavy power radio burst last night aroun 6:32am.
Dr Bergson is on the way to war, she has clearly lost it.

A few hours after this last entry a massive fusion discharge occured near the entry of reactor room of pandora 01.
Earth authority choose to discard Dr Bergson clear warning and send a recovery team to Pandora three month later.
Upon arriving the rescue mission found the emplacement of the base scorched clean by fusion fire. A few hour after they arrive the rescue mission went dark and cease to emmit. A passing mlning barge receive and transmit to hearth a data packet containing video feeds from rescue mission armors.
A large spherical object (a bit bigger than a basketball) shrouded in a navy blue smoke was attackingthe the team, using herself as a projectile, and seemingly creating very hard vacuum and heavy pressure environement at will.
The creature (Later called an Umbra) quickly dealt with the human and then started to hover twenty five centimeter above the blue goo wch by then has covered most of what was the base. Most of what is today known about umbra was by dissecting said video feed and by the study of the decease umbra corps found on Ceres
