Arcane Gyre Spell in Tales of the Transmuter | World Anvil

Arcane Gyre

An arcane gyre is an arcana-based manipulation of space such that those trying to use teleportation magic to enter the vicinity of the effect are teleported directly into its center. Most arcane gyres are installed by municipal arcanists - such as members of the Winder's Guild - to take the complication out of planning precise jumps to commonly-traversed areas, but they can also be used as a way to trap unwary arcanists or, conversely, redirect them away from restricted areas.

Effect

The orange arcana focus placed during the construction of an arcane gyre draws in the magical energies of those attempting to use teleportation magic, skewing the targets of these spells. As a result, unless the arcanist is either very strong or very knowledgeable about such traps, they will find themselves teleported into the center rather than their intended destination. Scrying and other kinds of arcana targeting the area remain unaffected by the presence of an arcane gyre, however, further enhancing the element of surprise. The area covered by an arcane gyre is set at the time of its creation, but seldom extends more than thirty feet from the arcana focus.

Manifestation

An arcane gyre is, itself, a class of magical construction - or 'machinery,' as such things are known in arcanist circles. The arcana focus powering the gyre typically lies at the center of a web of magical diagrams painted, etched, or inscribed upon a surface, the area of these diagrams being around a tenth of the size of the trapped area.
