Church of the Life Giver

At least he was headed back to a more civilized-looking neighborhood, with tree-lined streets bordered by squarish five-story buildings, each a different color. All of a sudden he felt dirty, and tried in vain to at least dust off his clothes. A doubly futile gesture as the approaching noon was chasing people inside one by one. Soon there was no-one he could ask for directions, and even with the map he took a few wrong turns. But there was no mistaking the geometric spire that dominated the local skyline. Even with his limited knowledge, the building it belonged to could only have been a church. Only it was obviously neglected, holes in the roof and boarded-up windows a mute lament of glory past.

To his surprise, the ample front doors weren't locked, as he discovered after knocking with both fists yielded no answer. Inside, the air was dry and cool, and his steps echoed under the high ceiling while he ambled along countless pews towards the front of the nave. A stained glass window arched tall behind the altar; it depicted a man in white robes rising into the sky, surrounded by light. The scene had a hypnotic quality, aided by the sunrays filtering in from the other side. Doran forgot the time as he stood on the floor below, trying to take it all in.

"What's the point?" asked the refugee, waving a hand at the artwork. "What does the man in the picture represent?"

"Victory over death. Ironic, isn't it?"
