Grip of the Mind Thieves, Chapter 8: Drones and Dire Discoveries

GREETINGS TRUE BELIEVERS!

Welcome back!

In New York City, life continued as it always does. A hectic, frantic, yet normal pace. Below Central Park, in the mysterious Garden of the Heavens chambers, it was anything but normal for the Knights Vigilant!

The Golden Lotus raced into the stairwell to the lower chamber, unaware that Taki was waiting for them. A quick attack staggered the lead foot soldier, blocking the rest.

The fight was on!

However, as the Knights Vigilant got the upper hand against the Golden Lotus members, the unexpected caught everyone by surprise. For unknown reasons, the strange crystals that lined the walls of the lower ‘greenhouse’ chamber erupted in a bright flash of energy! This didn’t happen just once, but at least three times, leaving three of our heroes a bit changed…

But!

No matter if they now have six arms, barely controlled ice powers, or were now weightless, the Knights Vigilant still turned the tables on the Golden Lotus. Our heroes quickly fought their way back upstairs.

Yet! More surprises were lying in wait!

Upstairs, two of Dr Overmind’s drones had slipped in through a secret door in the back of the chamber, just behind the alchemy tables. Right behind them were three members of the Disco Boys!

Are they working together? This isn’t the first time the Disco Boys have appeared at the same time as Dr. Overmind’s drones. Could it be just an unhappy coincidence?

Hard to say, True Believers. But, no matter what, this spells trouble for our heroes!

This is Not Stan Lee saying...

EXCELSIOR!

Goals

The members of Mouse Force were mutated by a strange orange ooze. This is the same formula invented by Dr. Killian and almost used by the Clock King to contaminate the local water supply. Orange ooze known to the team to be made from the ultra rare and mysterious Crystal Jade Vine plant.

However, formula made from the orange blossoms of the vine are known to be unstable. Meta powers they grant are often temporary and harmful! Therefore, the Knights Vigilant have to...

... find where the remainder of Dr. Killian's nefarious formula wound up? Is it in the hands of Dr. Overmind? Or someone of an equal amoral and criminal mind?

... deduce the secret of the ooze, or at least a cure, for their old friends, Mouse Force. Time may be running out for them! Will our heroes, the Knights Vigilant, find a way to help them?

... last, if the technological hand of Dr. Overmind is behind this, our heroes have to deduce his nefarious scheme and put a stop to it, before innocents are hurt!

The situation is getting dire, True Believers!

The members of Mouse Force are feeling the effects of the orange ooze! At least one member has developed out of control energy blasts out of his eyes! Another is losing control of a runaway phase or dispersal power! Then poor Donata is slowly transforming into a plasma being! While researching how to help the Knights Vigilant, Tesla Coil is working overtime to invent gadgets to stabilize Mouse Force until the other heroes find a cure!

What is the mysterious orange ooze that seems to be at the source of these troubles? Will Dr. Isley discover something no one else has?

The investigation at Pier I turned up a discovery that someone had been lying in wait in a closed down news stand. But who? Were they caught on camera? And how were the other people hit that ambushed our heroes?

Also! Our heroes have discovered Dr. Overmind is using the New York Times crossword puzzle as a guide to commit his crimes! But who is this "S. Sphinx" that submitted the puzzle to the newspaper?

Then there are the duplicates of the diorama. What were they for? What is Overmind's plan for them? And the latest puzzle... "A waxing or waning fortune or fame"... what does it mean?

The information from Detective Hirokoma Kozu of the Central Park Precinct was enlightening. Dr. Overmind is certainly creating a duplicate of New York City… specifically, the tunnel system! It’s certain this is key to his overall plans. But why? Is it trying to transport something? Or locate something to be transported?

And now!

The search for the tunnels has uncovered what appears to be a ‘secret garden’ underneath the Bow Bridge south of the Ramble in Central Park! This mysterious two chamber garden mirrors the ancient architecture of an Egyptian temple. Specifically to the trickster god of Sutekh… also called Set!

There’s more to it than that, True Believers! That’s a spot with its own rich history as that is the infamous Garden of the Heavens where people have spontaneously developed meta-powers and more!

'Nuff Said!

Yet! That wasn’t the only thing there and it raises so many questions! Why are the Golden Lotus growing containers of flowering vines there? Why did Dr. Overmind’s drones show up and what are they after? What are the Disco Boys, who also showed up, want there?

… and then, where does the secret door in the back of the entrance chamber lead to?
