The Sparrow family has called Ghal Pelor home for centuries now where they've become known for their apple orchards and apiary. They've amassed a small fortune, established a good name for themselves, and even have a small trade operation with Ackley Ales. They're successful yet rather mundane.
That, however, was not always the case. The Sparrow family was deeply connected to the ancient College of Magic and many of their members served or studied under the institution. That tradition died out when the College itself became one of the many casualties in The Autumn Queen's war. While the oath of service the Sparrows pledged has been forgotten by there is one who still carries the torch... Digby Sparrow. This ancient old codger refused to be the only Sparrow bearing the burden of their ancient promise. He scooped up his granddaughter from Ghal Pelor to join in his crusade and from that day since he's been making her life miserable.
Charity was the eldest daughter, the most responsible, the most well-studied, and the best suited to be her grandfather's lackey. Before his coming to Ghal Pelor her life was unremarkable; spent mostly in libraries and classrooms toiling away in history books. Then he came and made an offer to her - a life of excitement and adventure... even the promise of learning magic. What she did not know is that would come at a cost. It's been close to a year she's been traveling with him and has spent more time doing his laundry, tending to his chores, and running errands across every town they've visited. All the while she's been the victim of his frustrations in the form of insults and cruel remarks. While never an extravert by any measure; Charity has been brow-beaten to the point where she questions her self worth constantly and lacks even the simplest foundation of confidence.
Despite all of his abuse Digby did teach her magic though only just enough to make her more useful to him. In her own free time she learned the true extent of what the old schools of magic could do and one in particular stood out to her as worthy of pursuit. Necromancy. She saw within it the power needed to be able to change the world for the better; the same way the Baradradi magicians do.
Their latest travels have taken Charity and her grandfather to Frial where he hopes to restore Wagner Abbey into a functional College of Magic once again. To that end he's employed a number of expendable pawns into his scheme including his Charity herself. The only compensation she seeks in return the the hope of a kind word or small praise. So far she's still waiting.
