Swarm of Vampire Locusts
First, you hear a faint buzzing sound. As the buzzing gets stronger and stronger, you realize that you are listening to millions of small insects. Soon you see the dark cloud, too, getting closer and closer. And when the cloud passes the crop, you realize these are not regular locusts. They are not coming for your harvest. They are coming for your livestock, your friends, your family, and for you.
Vampire locusts function more or less the same way as regular locusts. They form gargantuan clouds to search for food and eat. They exist only for a couple of months, although their existence, being undead, differs from ordinary locusts. What sets them apart from other locusts is their nourishment. They have an insatiable hunger for blood. Nothing survives, from small rodents to giant monsters, if it gets in the path of a swarm. Their only lucky trait is that they don't spawn additional vampires. They suck every creature completely dry, and nothing else remains, only their husks. If you come across a town where dead bodies are lying around everywhere, you can be pretty sure it was the work of a vampire locust swarm.
Scholars have a lot of theory how a vampire locust comes into existence. These theories range from regular locusts that ate crops with vampire blood on them to have some insidious vampire creating and releasing them on the world to ruin the outside world. Still, even these scholars admit their theories are just theories and not based on any facts because none of the theories can describe how a huge swarm can exist.
Unlike regular locust swarms, vampire locusts don't follow a cycle when they appear. So if you hear buzzing in the distance, you better pray to your god or run as you have never run before.
