Jonathan calls himself a practical philosopher. It is an apt description. He is familiar with the great philosophers and knows a lot about the smaller ones. He keeps up his knowledge by reading and discussing whenever he can. The 'practical' part is more complicated though. You could also call him en ensurer, a protector, or simply a mob boss. But you'd better not say that last one out loud. If you want any form of protection or ensurance, you talk to him. If you do not want your store to be robbed, you go to him. It's not that he robs unprotected stores. It's just that his odds of figuring out who robbed you are so great, that clever robbers avoid don't try it. Which means you only have to worry about stupid robbers, who can be caught much more easily, making it a self-filfulling ensurance. His odds are so great because he doesn't just discuss philosophy. He listens to people. And his helpers do too. He knows members of both political parties, he knows members of local law enforcement, he knows rich people and he knows poor people and he knows the local criminal scene. He knows how to turn the wheels behind the scenes. And you pay him to do that. Sometimes with money. Sometimes with favours. You want to ensure the safety of your smuggling operation? No problem, there was just a police officer who wanted to ensure his promotion. Your route is safe. The one for the lightly sedating and euphoric drugs that is. Just give up your underling who set up the distribution chain for the incredibly addictive and harmful drugs. You want it the other way around? Not impossible, but that is going to cost you a lot more. 
The business started as a classic extortion scheme of course. Jonathan grew up as the heir apparent of the local mob. But he read too much and had too much of a conscience to follow in his parents footsteps. So he carves out his own path. He is in his early thirties now and is quite happy. He never married, but took in ca 10 year younger Clifford and ca 20 year younger Faith and acts like their adoptive father. 
He wears a brown leather top hat, adorned with gears. He likes the symbolic meaning of those gears. 
There are rumours that he dabbles in magic.
