The Stone Chamber of Unnatural Births

The Darkness is a comfort compared to what is about to happen next. At first there is a quiet crackling sound just beyond the strange stone casket they trapped you in. You can fiently hear the creature in the second, a wolf you guess by the sounds it made. You don't have much time to think however as a strange fluid starts to fill the chamber you are in. Thick, viscous and with a strange medicinal scent it fills the chamber and you hold your breath as long as you can. Strangely when you do finally feel your lungs near burst and swallow the strange slime you find yourself able to breath in it easily. Alas as the panic from drowning in slime fades a new one replaces it.   The pain is like nothing you can describe. You feel as if you are being unraveled like a spool of twine. You try to fight and struggle but the excruciating agony is relentless and by the sounds you hear the poor wolf in the other chamber is suffering just as terribly. As swiftly as it it started the pain seems to fade and you think you must be deaf because you no longer hear your frantic strikes against the lid of your fluid filled chamber.   You relax and then it strikes you, you are no longer breathing, no longer feeling and your body every last bit of it hair, flesh, bone and blood is gone dissolved and siphoned out of the chamber leaving you a disembodied ghost trapped here by the chambers strange runes. You cry as loud as you can to any god or being you think might show mercy upon you and find that no one seems to care.   Before you can properly fathom what has entirely happened you, your spirit you at any rate is pulled into the strange brass tubes that adorned the device. You can only compare what happens next to a feeling like being wool drawn apart and made into yarn, pulled torn drawn and spooled. The agony your spirit endures makes you nearly nostalgic for the physical suffering of earlier.   The analogy to yarn continues as the device hums with power as it starts to knit. What it knits is, was, your body and the body of the wolf, taking elements from both creating what is neither man nor beast but an amalgamation of both. It is a husk however, it has no soul, just a statue of flesh and bones however the knitting is not yet done.   You are drawn like a long spool of yarn on your grandmothers knitting needle and the spirit of the beast is on a needle opposite you. You can do nothing not even scream as you and a lupine are knitted together to become the spirit for the newly created creature. The pain is not so unbearable but the madness is like a lifetime of torment. Your memories, your sense of self, everything that makes you who you are struggles as the spirit of another is melded with you. The worst part is you can feel yourself being lost, you can remember who you are and are aware how much of that self is slipping away by the second.   As the process continues you become confused, was your mother a wolf? Did you play tag with human children? Did you have a name? Does the moon make you want to howl? You cry as two souls are forged into one and both are left broken and confused. You cry as the chamber opens and you take a breath and flex your clawed fingers. The memories of who you were become broken things hovering at the edges of your mind.   You are... you now, created to serve the Chambers master, was there ever a person or an animal? What of the screaming nightmares that haunt the shadows of your memory? You have little time to ponder as a weapon is offered into your hand and a voices whose command you can barely deny speaks to you   "Come my new beastman your brothers and sisters await!"

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The Chambers are large Stone Coffins able to house a creature up to twenty feet or so in height (maybe larger as the current Chamber is said to have once had sub-chambers large enough to fit even gargantuan beasts). Each Chamber is like a stone coffin adorned with harsh angular runes that glow toxic green when the device is in use. Various tubes and hoses connect the chambers or hang loose and unused awaiting for more chambers to be attached. It is clear that over the eons various parts have been replaced with the hoses, tubes, pipes and even control panel showing signs of repair and replacement.   The Control Panel is attached to the central chamber and who ever is the first person to activate it in a twenty four hour period becomes the devices master. The machine is controlled by thoughts and the will and knowledge of its current master with masters more well trained in biology, medicine and the nature of the soul having greater degrees of command over the devices functionality manipulation.   The majority of how the machine does what it does is not understood, It seems to draw power from the stones that were carved from Syanns womb and combines that with powerful Transmutation Magic that allows for the machine to twist and manipulate flesh, blood and souls of beings inside the chambers to create entirely new lifeforms.   All that is certain is that the process of creating these new beings is exceedingly painful and leaves nearly all of the victims of the Chamber as broken souled beings who suffer weeping sorrow filled nightmares born from their unnatural creation and it is a mercy that their offspring are free of this spiritual agony.

History

In eons long past when the dragons waged war against pelagic primal horrors both empires would seek to employ elevated beasts given humanoid shape to serve them. The magic used to create the many suarian, reptilian and deepsea life based humanoids was a marvel used on such a scale that only gods would later be able to reproduce.   Many would attempt such magic but all would fail to create life on the same scale and with the intricacy as the empires of Dragons or the deep sea domains of their rivals. This was until the Ghoblyns of old took it upon themselves to create and shape life suited to their war effort.   The Ghoblyns delved deep into the living world of Syann and sought out stone that was in effect part of the world beasts womb and would use the very life force infused stones of the Great Mother Planet to craft the first Stone Chambers of Birth (As they were called) Many experiments followed and it soon became evident that new life could not be created from nothing and beast spirits could not be reshaped into tool using or warrior servants. Thus three chambers would be crafted into one terrible device.   Capable of tearing apart two (or more) beings bodies and souls the Chamber could rebuild elements of the former bodies and spirits into a new being that while remaining spiritualy broken would be loyal to the Chambers Master its past lives little more than haunting nightmarish memories and in many cases the offspring of such broken souled creatures breed true, but lacked the mind controlled loyalty or the shattered spirit of the parent. Worgs, Orcs, Ogres and countless other races were created by the Ghoblyn and use in their wars and have long since become true breeding free willed races in our world. The fall of the Ghoblyns in part when their own Orc Slave race turned on them caused the Chambers of Rebirth to be lost appearing here and there in the hands of the power hungry or mad trying to use them to breed armies or torture people in bizarre experiments.   Their next well known use was during the height of the first city in a lost hyperborean era, racist, human-centric and mage-centric the rulers of the first city would use the devices to alter slaves to creature stronger more loyal slaves. Lowly humans of what they felt were inferior in culture were fused with Bulls, Horses, Dogs, Hyenas and many other beasts to use as brute muscle in the arena or warfare. They also re-discovered more fine control and alteration was possible and supposedly even found ways to alter a beings from and still maintain the original psyche. In fact many claim the Chamber was used by the Nobles of the First City to make themselves into something more than human.   The last major usage of a Chamber of of Unnatural Births (as they would come to be called) was during the Mage Wars Era when Taeloz Bachella would unearth one and use it to create armies of beastmen out of weak men and women unwilling or unable to fight in his army. After Taeloz became the god of darkness he left little knowledge about the Chambers operation and thus it remains in the Island where he arose and in the hands of his worshipers. Though many have and yet do plan to attack the island and retrieve the Chamber some to lock it away, others to destroy it and perhaps many more who long to unravel its power and gain mastery over the creation and alteration of life on a level only masters of transmutation might ever reach after a lifetime of study.

Significance

The Chamber of Unnatural Births goes above and beyond all but the most powerful transmutative magics. It can be used at its most basic function to fuse souls and bodies together and create entirely new beings at the command of the Chambers current master. Adept masters can even program certain elements, tendencies and fine details into their new life form. Typically being engineered to be warlike and loyal to the Chambers master are most common. (Although it is of note that the free will gifted to all mortal souls gifted by the custodian gods are as ever a rule breaker and creations of the Chamber have on occasion turned against programing by their master)   With more understanding and control the device can use multiple chambers (The current Chamber has only three) to select, extract and combine elements from several different lifeforms (The first chambers were said to have no less then five chambers but sometimes as many as ten). If the legends are true the most adept masters of the Chamber can even alter themselves or allow a being retain its mind and abilities while making them like onto a demi-god.   Who ever can command and use the Chamber stands closer to the creative powers of a god then even the mightiest spellcaster has any right to be.
Creation Date
Unknown, thought to be during the early days of the first mortal age.
Rarity
There is known to only a handful of Stone Chambers that were built in ages long past that were uncovered and used by others. Most infamously the fallen first city of man used three such devices to forge their armies of Loyal Beastfolk. They were thought destroyed or lost until eons later during the Mage War Era Taeloz Bachella the Umbral-Warlord came into possession of one and used it to create legions of beastfolk to fuel his war machine. That device supposedly resides somewhere in the nation of Sahvarn where it is still used to this day.   Mercifully there have been no other recorded Chambers found in the last eight hundred years and many who know of these devices hope that none are found or their use re-discovered.
