The Violet Revolutions
The Violet Revolutions were a series of guerrilla battles beginning in the region of surrounding Xell. These battles were sparked by the lower-classes and several religious and educational interest groups against the controlling infrastructure and guilds due to unfair taxation, law, and social immobility, named for the violet-covered field Xell's Regina, having escaped the protective imprisonment of her advisors, requested a convention and temporary truce to work out how best to address the issues of the people. As the fight for welfare spread across Talthei, supporters could be identified by a violet, either botanical or fabric, pinned to the person's chest.
The Conflict
Outcome
In the short-term, the influence of guilds, specifically merchants and academic guilds that did not support the Violet Revolutions, was reduced socially and fiscally from lost or destroyed property. A short era of poetry and song was created to mock these organizations, including the famous poem "I Could Bury You In Your Pile Of Silverware."
Aftermath
Across Talthei, education to a certain level (reading, maths, basic history and culture of the world) is free for anyone. While most people are sent by their parents as children, it's also not uncommon to see an teen or adult sitting in the back of the classroom for a refresher. As well, many trades opened up at least one spot for someone who may not have been able to afford the classic apprenticeship fee. As knowledge became a point of cultural pride, exhibitions became their own minor holidays, with schools, research societies, and craftsmen gathering together to demonstrate the basic principles of their work, as well as to share specialized knowledge (aka fight for bragging rights for most interesting research) in their fields. These exhibitions are often celebrated with feasting and other forms of entertainment nearby.
