Dewellians Ethnicity in Talthei | World Anvil

Dewellians

Dewellians is a shorthand term for the secluded elven population from the Dewell-Esteian forests.    Although the exact population of Dewellians is uncounted due to their private nature and protective magic infused into the Dewell-Esteian forests, it's generally believed that there are at least three major settlements scattered throughout the forest.    Those not of the forests will be familiar with the various Dewellings scattered throughout Talthei. While you'll never see a Dewelling child out and about, the seclusion of the culture remains solely about their home. On the whole, the culture is happy to travel and interact with other regions.    While fabric made in the forests are highly valued, the most highly valued export of Dewellians are their songs. No library is without the a record of the oral history of the Dewell-Estian region, almost universally lauded as being both beautifully poetic and historically accurate.    As well, it is considered a sign of great respect or affection for a Dewellian to dedicate a song or poem to an individual.

Naming Traditions

Other names

Sex and Dewellian Naming Conventions

Dewellian society is a bit different in that the sex of the child has nothing to do with naming. Instead, as Dewellians hit their naming ceremony, the typical practice is to combine things that they love, including almost always a word from their favorite song.  Dewellians take the practice of delayed naming. Until the age of majority, children are referred to in their communities by nicknames. These can be tied to a named family member they spend their time with ("Eleyxi's gift"), or other things that they end up spending a great deal of time with or doing ("baking child", "stone hoarder").

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Dewellians value beauty of sound above most. This is likely tied to the spread of their settlements. As a way to communicate over wide distances, their own system of whistle and song calls was developed. From a young age, each child is taught tonality and melody, and a Dewellian settlement that goes a day without someone singing is impossible to imagine. Song is tied to all major and minor rites, from mourning to meals.

Wow, a culture about singing and the beauty of sound! That sounds amazing... Heh. Ahem.   I wonder what would happen if a Dewellian could not sing, or was deaf? How would they be treated in the society?   Great idea, great article. Best of luck with Summercamp!
