Weapons

The arms industry plays a significant part in the World of Swan Song. With the destabilization of many nations, the increase in armed conflict, and the growth of the private security sector, the armament and the related defense markets have experienced a boom. The arms industry primarily cover infantry small arms and heavy weapons, as well as munitions.   Although the arms market has expanded rapidly over the past, most of the small arms technology has not made many strides. Firearms are primarily chemically-propelled slug throwers and the basic principles have not improved much. However, there has been much advancement in materials technology, ergonomics, and human interface, as well as manufacturing techniques. Many firearms built since the invention of space travel have a digital ammo counter, usually placed behind the rear sight, to make the counter within the sight picture of the shooter, and advanced imaging systems, biometric safeties and simsense-related smartgun link have enhanced the human interaction with the gun.   There are also numerous standardizations within the arms market. Many firearms include accessory mounts built into the frame of the gun, allowing for quick attachment and interchangeability. Ammunition has also become standardized, with each class of weapon having a defined caliber, with some exceptions. For example, "submachineguns" no longer use pistol ammunition, but an intermediate cartridge between pistols and assault rifles.   Small arms ammunition typically is available in brass or aluminum cased cartridges or in caseless ammunition, which has become more common. Lead-cored, full-metal-jacketed ammunition is still the milspec standard for general issue, but special projectiles such as explosive slugs and flechette clusters have become more available to both military and civilian shooters.   With the arrival of physical adepts and large-body Species and the return of advanced fighting techniques, there has been an growth of close-combat weaponry, with non-lethal electroshock weaponry and the enhanced lethality of the monomolecular weapons and high-frequency blades being the most technically advanced.
 

Weapon Properties

Accuracy (Acc)

Refers to a weapon’s overall accuracy. A weapon’s Accuracy acts as the limit for tests involving that weapon, capping the number of hits that can be achieved on an attack roll using it.
 

Ammo

Refers to the amount of ammunition a ranged weapon can hold. If the the amount is followed by a multiplier (e.g. 6x2) this means the weapon holds several clips/magazines at the same time. These need to be reloaded separately.
 

Armor Penetration (ARP)

All weapons have an Armor Penetration value, although in some cases, this value is listed with no value, meaning no ARP. The ARP value indicates how a weapon interacts with armor. A positive value reduces the target’s Armor value, while a negative value increases the target’s Armor value.
 

Availability (Avail)

The higher the Availability of an item, the more difficult and costly it is to get it. Gear without an Availability rating can be bought at an appropriate local store or ordered online without any trouble. The letter that follows an item’s numerical Availability rating shows whether the item is Restricted (R) or Forbidden (F). Items without a letter attached to their availability rating are considered legal—they aren’t necessarily easy to find, but you won’t ever get arrested for seeking them.
 

Concealability (Conc)

This indicates how easy it is to hide a given item, and is inversely applied as a dice pool modifier to Perception + Intuition Tests to spot the item.
 

Cost

This is the base price a character must pay to buy the item. If the item is legal, this is the standard price found at stores or online. Note that rare and/or illegal items may cost less or more depending on certain black market variations. Usually forbidden items or items that have an availability over a certain range, have their cost increased beyond the listed cost. Cost is also subject to local supply and demand, so the gamemaster should feel free to adjust it accordingly for certain settings.
 

Damage Value (DV)

A weapon’s Damage Value represents the base amount of harm, in points of damage, it causes when it hits a target. Damage Values consist of a number (the damage inflicted) and a letter indicating the Damage Type caused. A parenthetical annotation following the damage type, such as (f), indicates that the damage is flechette damage, using flechette rounds and having reduced armor penetration.
 

Mode

A firearm’s firing mode indicates the rate of fire it is capable of. Some weapons have more than one mode available, so characters may switch between them (see Actions). The firing modes are: SS (single-shot), SA (semi-automatic), BF (burst fire), and FA (full auto) (see Ranged Combat).
 

Range

Distance to target is always a factor when firing or throwing a weapon. For information on Range modifiers, see Ranged Combat. Range modifiers are mitigated by the Image Magnification modification and tracer rounds.
 
Note that only weapons that have a minimum effective range list it in their entries. All other weapons are expected to have a minimum range of 0.

Reach

Melee weapons may have a Reach rating, an abstract value that rates the length and size of the weapon. A weapon with longer Reach gives its wielder an advantage over enemies with a lower Reach (see Melee Combat).
 

Recoil Compensation (RC)

This lists the amount of recoil compensation a firearm has to offer, reducing the modifiers from a weapon’s recoil (see Ranged Combat). Numbers in parentheses refer to full recoil compensation that applies only when all integral accessories are deployed (folding or detachable stocks and so forth).
 

Weight

This represents the weapon's weight / encumbrance, that gets tallied up against your carrying capacity.
 

Qualities

Blast(-X/m)

The weapon also deals its damage around the target, on a hit. This damages decreases by -X/meter. See Ranged Combat for more information on blast damage.
 

Modification Slots

There are several places where a weapon accessory can be attached to a firearm. Only one accessory can be attached to a particular mount. Stock accessories (those that come with the weapon) don’t take up mount slots. Integral accessories (those marked with a "*") can't be removed from a weapon without breaking the weapon. Projectile weapons (bows, crossbows) can only take accessories designed for them specifically.
 

Special

The weapon possesses one or more special qualities with unique effects. They are detailed in a weapon's description.
 

Two-Handed

Weapons with this quality require two hands to wield. If you try using them with only one hand, you receive a -6 dice pool penalty an your test. You also don't get a bonus to your recoil compensation from using both hands (unless you have more than two hands to stabilize the weapon).
 

Wireless

These benefits only apply when the item’s wireless mode is on. Your Ares Alpha can’t auto-adjust for the wind direction and speed if it can’t download local upto-the-second weather conditions. A wireless device is always vulnerable to subversion and control by a hacker within wireless handshake range. You can defend your gear with a good commlink and a personal area network. Even better, defending against threats from the Matrix is part of your team hacker’s job. If she’s not available, you might occasionally want to turn wireless off.
 

MELEE WEAPONS

Melee weapons are for ending the lives of people conveniently within arm’s reach (see Melee Combat). Some Crosser swear by them, especially those who prefer to kill silently or are afraid of hackers bricking their guns.   The damage value of most melee weapons is based on the wielder’s Strength, modified by the weapon. The game statistics of improvised melee weapons can be found in Melee Combat, while implant weapons are found in CyberWare (Augmentations).

Is it a belt, or is it a deadly weapon? A strange question, but one you must ask yourself when it comes to the Memory Blade. Cavalier uses their SmartSteel technology to provide a flexible material that can be commanded to stiffen and form a blade. They currently have two “self-defense” designs available for special order. The Belt, a sword length design worn around the waist, and the Bracelet, a design aimed at lady execs who want a little extra protection. Mostly found on executives with too much money, they often find their way into the shadow market after extraction ops.   With a good decker you can modify the basic shape if you don’t want a bracelet or belt. It takes a little bit of skill, but a few Matrix jockey’s have uploaded pre-programmed codes to various sites to reshape them as anklets, bandoliers, connected rings, or armbands.

Whether it’s redirecting bulls, snagging wrists, or lashing infidels, the whip has seen an interesting history as a tool, a showpiece, a torture device, and a weapon. This versatility is both its greatest asset and its biggest detriment. The training that is needed to use this weapon is very specific, but a truly skilled individual can perform feats with this item unmatched by any other weapon.   Special: A whip can be used to snare handheld objects, including weapons, or to trip an opponent using the Called Shot rules. Disarming or grabbing a held object requires a Blast Out of Hands called shot with an additional Opposed Strength Test to yank the item free and toward, instead of away from, the attacker. The attacker must be within 2 meters of the opponent and gains a +2 dice pool bonus to their Strength Test. Tripping an opponent uses the Knockdown called shot. It was popular culture that made the idea of wielding a tree-trimming tool as an implement of death part of popular myth. After someone made a flatvid film about a chainsaw-wielding killer in Texas and then slipped a fictional S-Mart model over the stumpy forearm of a time-traveling fighter of evil, the chainsaw somehow became thought of as a sword with a spinning chain blade. This can be as simple as a string attached to a pair of pencils but is usually a far more professional tool. The garrote is a handheld weapon designed to quietly kill via strangulation. The weapon consists of a central string, usually a semiflexible wire of some sort, attached to a pair of handles used to pull the weapon tight once it is wrapped around a targets neck. Death is slow and unpleasant as the target usually struggles intensely, so a strong stomach and skill are both required.   Special: Using a garrote requires and initial successful attack test to get the weapon in place similar to subduing combat. The attacker uses their Exotic Melee Weapon (Garrote) skill to initiate the subduing. The attack must use the Called Shot Location modifier and needs at least 1 net hit to succeed. After the weapon is in place, the attacking character can choose to do the damage of the weapon during their next Action Phase along with improving their hold with another Attack Test or knocking the opponent to the ground. Breaking free of the garrote requires an Agility + Unarmed Combat [Physical] Test with a threshold of the attacker’s net hits on all attacks or a successful Knock Out of Hands called shot or similar attack that breaks the attacker’s grip.

Monofilament makes everything better or so Media would like us to believe. While the civilian model is actually used for cutting things like concrete and sculpting stone, that is just never enough. The line extends out to two meters, and retracts into the weapon’s handle when not in use.   Special: The whip action, the weighted tip, and the deadly thread of the monofilament line itself make this weapon a potential danger to it’s wielder. On a glitch, you catch the weighted tip on something nearby and need to disentangle it before you make another proper attack with it. This could be a traditional longbow of fiberglass or wood, or possibly a modern compound-and-pulley bow.   Bows have ratings that indicate the minimum Strength you need to use that weapon. When attacking with a bow, a character whose Strength is less than the Strength minimum suffers a –3 dice pool modifier per point below the minimum; this penalty reflects the difficulty they have in pulling the bow and nocking an arrow.   The weapon’s Rating is also used to determine its range and damage (maximum Rating is 10). Use the lowest value of your Strength, the bow’s rating, or the arrow Rating for range and damage when attacking a target, because your average Rating 10 titanium-sheathed beryllium-alloy bow tends to turn wood or fiberglass arrows into powder when they hit a target.

Cold steel that spits hot lead. Slug-throwing firearms are by far the most common weapons on the streets of the known universe. Each weapon is chambered to take either old-fashioned cased ammunition or caseless ammo. Most firearms load caseless ammunition, with fewer and fewer models coming in variants able to handle cased ammunition.   Sure, releasing a storm of shell casings when you hold down the trigger looks awesome, but it’s impractical for the modern Crossers and their natural enemy, law enforcement and corporate security.   Most firearms come with wireless capability and a digital ammunition counter. Ammunition is sold separately. All firearms have the following wireless bonuses in addition to any wireless bonuses on each model: Wireless: The weapon displays an ARO that tells you ammo levels and ammo type loaded. If you have a DNI, you get two additional benefits. First, ejecting a clip (for weapons that have them) is a Free Action rather than a Simple Action. Second, changing fire modes (on models that have more than one) is a Free Action rather than a Simple Action.

The Ares Secura super compact is the latest model the series of concealed pistols from Ares. It arose from the need of bodyguards, undercover officers and agents, carry a powerful pistol for their use to can. Like most Tedius weapons, a Power Shot is thrown forward when reloaded, with any rounds left in the magazine being lost but adding significantly to the damage from the explosion. Falling a distant third place between the constant advertising battle between the Lancer Guardian and the Ares Predator V, Ares has taken a different track with the latest iteration of the Manhunter. Removingt the smartlink and the associated features like electronic safety and clip ejection, and shifting everything back to traditional mechanical mechanisms with the exception of a holographic sight. The worst a hacker can do is make you slightly less accurate with this gun and that appeals to a lot of the less technologically minded consumers. This automatic pistol from S-K is in many ways a bold step. She is the official successor of the older P108, but apart from the naming scheme has little in common with the original. The completely redesigned weapon sports an electronic firing mechanism with caseless ammunition. Since the P118 also does not have a mechanical trigger, it is connected via cable or WiFi triggered via the internal smart gun system. To round it all off, the weapon was fitted with a biometric Security system and a friend/foe detection system built-in. The Custodes is the first attempt of a submachine gun from the house of Aethos. It originates from their security forces' need for greater firepower, which can also be carried concealed. It comes in two versions. The MPS (machine pistol "short") is the standard version and is intended to be worn under covert clothing by bodyguards. For this purpose, the shoulder support was removed to make it even more compact. If you don't want to go without it, it is available separately and can be retrofitted to the gun. The MPC (machine pistol "concealed") is mounted together delivered with a case. In its handle is a button that opens the case and the gun is released. The handle is also the carrying strap, which, due to the smart materials used is no longer solid, but flexible and elastic.   Special: Without the shoulder support the weapon has a Concealability modifier of 0, with it only -1. The MPC Version costs +750 NC and needs a simple action to be removed from the briefcase.

The Executioner is still the ultimate in concealable firepower for the executive protection professional. The weapon neatly fits down into a specially designed small briefcase, available in a number of different styles and colors (+600 NC per extra case). The weapon can be fired from the briefcase by pushing a concealed stud, or through the user’s PAN with smartlinked versions (+750 NC). Recoil penalties are doubled when fired from the briefcase, but the surprise the Executioner provides may be enough to ensure survival. The Executioner also features an integral sound suppressor and an extendable stock for occasions when it is removed from its case.   Special: The Executioner takes a Simple Action to remove from the case for conventional usage and removal is required to reload its caseless ammunition.

The special "Commando" variant 223C has a shortened barrel and the typical fold-out stock. Of course it uses the same ammunition as the normal S-K 223, but loses out a bit in range. It’s used by commando units of the military as well as by special units of the police. And by private security services. Saedan-Khaine has of course introduced some improvements. Attached to the weapon are mounting rails, and modern polymers have been used to lower the weight of the weapon. In addition, the magazine shaft has been shortened, which considerably simplifies the introduction of a new magazine in combat situations. The Enforcer is a submachine gun that combines all the advantages of the Urban family: it consists entirely of non-metallic components and has several fire modes. A further advantage is the integrated silencer, under which a micro grenade launcher is also installed. The silencer and launcher are, however, a fixed unit, which must be replaced together in case of damage or accidents. The Enforcer has no trigger unit and can only be fired via the built-in and particularly well secured Smartgun system. It became clear with time, especially in the case of deployments after Crash 2.0, that the old UCR's complex weapon system was too inflexible in many cases. This is the successor model of the G12A3. A number of improvements have been made to the loading mechanism, which now operates via an electrical motor as well as mechanically and is better suited to different environmental conditions. Even ten years after its introduction, the Striker is still the flagship model of the Urban series and is very convincing with its available modifications. The Tedius Powerblast had a long running advertisement, marketing it as baby's first shotgun, as it is the cheapest model on the market and fairly straightforward to use. MACHINE GUNS

Machine guns come in three varieties—light (LMG), medium (MMG), and heavy (HMG) — that determine their ranges. All, even the “light” ones, are in fact very heavy and large. A light machine gun is physically bigger and heavier than an assault rifle. MMGs and HMGs could be carried by someone with Strength of 8+ and 10+ (respectively), but they work better as vehicle-mounted weapons.   Use the Heavy Weapons skill when firing these weapons. While technically classified as a light machine gun, this six-barreled, belt-fed, rotary lead-spitter is usually mounted on vehicles, drones, or light aircraft. The “Vindi” is also popular with species of a larger stature. Despite the relatively light ammo it uses, the Vindicator has exceptional armor-piercing capabilities and decent recoil management. However, the weapon is also large and cumbersome. Operating the Vindicator requires a few seconds for the barrels to rotate before it can fire, which can only be done in the Full Auto mode. A smartgun system also comes standard.   Special: Users must take a Simple Action to rotate the barrels of the Vindicator before it can fire.

When the famed mercenary unit MET2000 commissioned Saedan-Khaine for a brand-new HMG, they only had two guidelines: make it easy to customize and make it powerful. The result was the SF-20, one of the hardest- hitting HMGs in the universe. The weapon quickly became a mainstay in the MET2000’s mechanized and assault forces. Easy-access construction points allows for easy customization while standard equipment includes a gas-vent system, a hip pad brace, and laser sight.

Ares has had there fair share of arms troubles over the past few years but this was not one of them. The Thunderstruck has been a massive market success, gaining even more brand recognition than the Taurus Braodside in the assault cannon category. It doesn’t pack quite the punch of a standard AC, but its lighter recoil load, quicker cycle time, and unmatched armor penetration have gone a long way to sway those consumers concerned about the heavier price tag.   Special: The Thunderstruck uses both ammunition and energy for each round fired. Power is supplied by peak-discharge battery packs and consumes 1 power unit per shot. The Thunderstruck can hold one power clip or draw its energy from an external source such as a satchel power pack, power backpack, or vehicle power if mounted.

The Ares Vigorous was billed as an early competitor for the Taurus Braodside. Early word of mouth on the early, bare-bones base model was poisonous, and that carried over to the models with all the bells and whistles. The nice part about that is if you don’t care about a smartlink system and realize firing twice with an assault cannon means you’ve done something wrong, then the Vigorous is your cannon of choice.
