Alex grew up in a New York city shattered by the first Rickti invasion. He has clear memories of him and his parents being taken from a burning dock to the safety of a Coast Guard cutter. It was no surprise that he applied to the USCG academy. It was during his junior year that his mutant powers first manifested. He was excited and delighted by his powers but his proudest day was when he graduated as a Coast Guard officer.

His official name is The Guardsman but in the Academy he earned the nickname of Coastie. A nickname that has followed him ever since. He has served and continues to serve with the Special Forces command on occasion but he keeps refusing a permanent reassignment. He prefers to serve in the Regular Coast Guard and is a well known sight in the American coastal waters. Most people know him from his involvement in the rescue of 45 people held hostage in the now famous S. S. Aqualia Marona Hijacking.
