Sunfall

The island of Sunfall was discovered in the early 17th century by shipwrecked fishermen. They found evidence of ancient civilization and learned new methods to cultivate the land. But still, food was scarce. With no established government, there were constant disputes about land, crops, and other resources. Some began to question the leadership of the ruling family, and a civil war broke out. The war accomplished little besides destroying once fertile land and bringing disease to the surviving inhabitants. They came to a stalemate, and those who were disloyal to the family were forced across the mountains in search of more hospitable lands. The island remained divided from east to west, each side establishing its own laws and government. About a hundred years later, the island was colonized by America because of its fertile waters and ideal location as a shipping hub. The island prospered from trade, immigration, and the lucrative commodity of whale oil. They considered themselves invaluable and precious, but when the Japanese attacked the tiny island at the height of WWII, America was deaf to their cries. The Japanese took many prisoners, slaughtered men, women, and children alike, and claimed the island for their own. They brutally punished any form of insurrection, and forced the citizens to make weapons of war. When the war ended and the Japanese soldiers were driven back to their homeland, America was quick to ask Sunfall for help with reconstruction, but they refused. They burned the American flag and denounced the military that abandoned them. Sunfall remained an American colony, but refused any sort of supplies or goods and sought to rebuild on their own. What was once a great hub of international trade and commerce, was reduced to a forgotten slum of refugees and criminals.
