Raurindi language Language in Sundered Lands | World Anvil

Raurindi language

The Raurin Empire lasted for over four thousand years. Ruled by an unbroken succession of benevolent Pharaonic priest-kings, it was the envy of the world. Traders travelled from all corners of the globe to market their wares, and diplomats of every race and kingdom presented their credentials at the court of the Pharaoh. The Raurin language was a widely-used trade tongue amongst much of the surrounding region, and its formal hieroglyphics, pictures representing concepts and ideas, was known across the lands. It was the official language of the many smaller nations and protectorates which sheltered under the wing of the Raurin empire, but they were encouraged to retain their own languages and culture as well.   The Raurindi people preserved their language and knowledge as a fixed and stable point as other kingdoms rose and fell around them. However, that all changed when the last Pharaoh, Amun-Re the Tyrant, was overthrown. As he fell, the holy Fountain of Athis, source of life in the kingdom, dried up. The people were plunged into despair, followed soon after by starvation.   The core of the Raurin empire was destroyed as the people were forced to flee for their lives and beg for shelter in the neighbouring kingdoms Amun-Re had plundered. Many died in that terrible time of turbulence and suffering. Regional satraps and governors struggled to hold their territories together with limited success. As the central government vanished, so too did the reasons for a shared language and writing system. Nations reverted purely to their own languages and dialects, and those with the ability to speak and read Raurindi died out.   Now, the spoken language is preserved only by a shrinking handful of tribes descended from the original Raurin people, grimly clinging to life around scattered desert oases. None can read the complex hieroglyphics within the temples and tombs occasionally unearthed by the desert wind, before the timeless sands swallow them once again.
