String Theory takes place in a world the protagonist, Prairie Marble, hardly remembers clearly at all. Almost nothing is known about it's current state of the world during the present time that the fic takes place. The only things the students trapped in the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles know, is that they've all been forced there against their will to participate in a killing game under the supervision of a manic dual toned bear and his small "children" of similar designs.

It's been implied that the world has changed somehow, although the "how" is unknown since there are several contradicting implications of it's change from the only source the students have: Monokuma himself. Whether or not they like the truth of the situation, only a few are bound to get out of there alive. Either kill a peer and get away with their murder in a class trial, or outlast all the other students.
