Ivaur Sphere
IVAUR CULTURAL OVERVIEW
Modern Ivaur culture is not shockingly different from any Terragen civilization, but it was shaped by a completely alien history.
Prehistoric to premodern ivaur had very short lifespans, 10-20 years at most. At the dawn of civilization, a loose societal structure formed that persisted for millenia- A sort of matriarchal extended family, not unlike a much smaller beehive, with one reproductive "queen". Family lineages within the clan could organize longer-term goals lasting perhaps many lifetimes, and ritualized exchanges of individuals between different clans helped genetic diversity.
Over the course of history, with many wars and even pre-spaceflight contact with stars and another far-away civilization, medical technology was always a focus. Longstanding taboo mostly prevented self-modification, the Ivaur made use of extensive genetic engineering on other organisms before they eventually extended their own lifespans.
Before the interplanetary age, one Ivaur nation in particular rose to dominate the planet, and it remains a primary force in intergalactic civilization. The strictly hierarchical nature of the early clans and later nations helped to create the current monolithic forms of government that control most of the abyssal sphere- in Ivaur space particularly, leaders are not elected and have nearly-totalitarian power, but fortunately for the population do not attempt to control the details of private life.
In nearly all Ivaur-controlled space, nobody is starving on the streets any more but are still required to work often-unfilfilling jobs to attain a reasonable standard of comfort and food other than Nutrient Goo. Ivaur are historically very spiritual but I have no idea for alien religion so i dunno Ivaur feel no strong connection to nature generally. Their homeworld is entirely urbanized, the only remaining natural life is in zoos or preserved in offworld habitats. While there is a taboo around self-engineering, this does not apply to other life. Crops have been thoroughly rewritten, no pets are -not- heavily modified, and they have created biotechnology like the cymophanes. One time that biotechnology rebelled, there is a splinter group of liberated creations from centuries ago, not currently in conflict with the ivaur.
