Faith Wars Treaty
The end of the faith wars came when both the temples of Murcurio and Lieh Tzu were granted visions and the treaty was found as prophesized. The Faith wars lasted for one hundred and fifteen years before a divine treaty intervened. The god of law and the god of freedom composed the treaty which forbid warring over type of worship or the worship of 'things that are not gods' with the exception of worshiping entities that mean harm to the world, mortal kind in general, and to their own followers. This caveat was put in place because of demons and other lower pane creatures that used the souls or pain and suffering of others as a source of power. The 'faithless' who made pacts with nature spirits and elementals rather than worshiping 'proper gods' were not to be made war upon under the treaty, nor was one temple allowed to attempt to eradicate another under the treaty.
Holy wars against other temples to gods as well as those who believed in or worshiped other entities was outlaws and after more than a century of fighting many were happy to sign and live by the treaty. There were some on both sides of the conflict though who couldn't stand the idea of making peace with so many who had killed their side because they decided that they needed to change the way they were allowed to believe. The same went for those on the side of the gods... Many were disillusioned by the idea that after fighting for so long in the name of their beliefs that the gods would turn their backs on them and just 'throw in the towel' as it were. These angry worshipers and believers became the root of dark worship turning to dark creatures from the outer planes or the worship of demons who pledged to stand beside them unlike their gods who had 'abandoned' them.
With wide spread religious wars banned, temples then found themselves having to make allowances for those who would worship the darker sides of the gods as others saw it. Warriors who walked the berserkers path would make offerings to the slaughtering aspect of the god of war, certain social factions revere T'lea as the goddess of hate rather than the goddess of love. These factions all had their own reasons for worship and still lived by an interpretation of the tenants of their deity. Thus many holy wars that might have been... were stopped before they started. The one exception to this is the children of Glory. The god of glory is not part of the pantheon of the rest of the gods and the Gnomes are his children entirely and they belong to no other god. While many gnomes have found faith in other temples and a few have found their faith to lay in the temple of glory... It is a separate religion with the god of Glory not belonging. How this came to be and why is still unknown.
Purpose
The treaty was created to stop a war that was being waged on the behalf of the gods... that the gods did not ask for but their worshipers undertook for them. This set the precedent that what the temples think is a good idea and seems like a good idea to a follower or worshiper may not be what a god wants. Mortal folly and free will were confirmed with this ongoing war and the amount of blood spilled. Also the fact that unless the mortals were not learning the lesson on their own the gods would take a backseat and somewhat hands off approach letting mortal kind make mistakes, even if it was in the gods name.
