Jurassines (ˈjʉɹ:as:i:ns)

A group of particularily eccentric people living in a deep space habitat near the Theta Centauri system, some 61 lightyears from Earth. They are very isolated from common human society, and have the notable feature of cloning dinosaurs, Jurassic Park style.   The name is what common humanity knows the people as, derived from Jurassic Park, the movie. They refer to themselves as Illoians, after their original home, Illoi.

Location

Within the Theta Centauri system, the single star has three rocky planets orbiting it. These are all colonized, if only with orbital settlments. The entire star system has a population of around 1.5 billion. The habitat the Jurassines reside in is called the Extinct no More, and has a population of around 1.4 million. It's a pretty standard O'Neill cylinder design, around 32 kilometers long. Nowadays, the Extinct resides in a roughly spiral orbit some 12 000 AU from the star within the system's Oort cloud-equivalent, and will degrade into a circular orbit in a couple thousand years.

History

At first, the habitat resided in the system proper, having been founded in 2754, in orbit around Laak. Back then, it was known as Illoi. The habitat was home to a particularly high amount of scientists, geneticists, specifically. A major expertise of the habitat was indeed genetic manipulation, primarily of animals, which earned the people there a hefty fortune. However, they wanted to go further.   In 2791, they used their sizable funds to recruit the crews of two now-obsolete sublight tradeships, primarily for their engines. The ships were named the Vode An and the Jigahmna. They were contracted to push Illoi, all the way out the Oort cloud-equivalent, and then let it go. It hasn't settled into an orbit yet, and is going away from the star, but will settle in a couple thousand years.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Their language, Kup, is descended from a couple of Scandinavian languages, mainly Norwegian, with some influence from south east Asian languages like Vietnamese. It's a small enough community that the language hasn't shifted that much, and the entire habitat speaks the language.

Shared customary codes and values

They love genetic modification and experimentation with animals. So much so, they left their original location to be allowed peace in their experiments. The peak of their experimentation is dinosaurs. They've done a Jurassic Park, but with less rampaging dinosaurs, and more peaceful coexistance. Sort of. Those dinosaurs are kept in nature preserves, which make up around 81% of the habitat's surface area, the rest being cities or other urban areas.   Illoians take great pride in their expertise, and, were it not for their isolationism, would likely have set up several other habitats to act as, well, Jurassic Parks, essentially. But since they are in the middle of nowhere, they keep to themselves, recreating dinosaurs and other extinct animals.

Average technological level

Quite high, being near-ish the Core Worlds. They have the means to resurrect dinosaurs, they a high level of tech.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

While they are expertised in genetic modification, they don't practise it much on themselves, rather animals. Thus, while small-scale and minor modification is a thing, there's not going to be any wacky people with shark fins or scales.

Major organizations

The habitat is governed by an elected group of people, as a standard representative democracy. The group, the council is known as the Executive committee, and it handles most every major thing happening, from trade relations to internal affairs.

Connections

While the Extinct no More is quite isolated, they do still trade for more complex materials. They've set up a few trade deals with in-system factions, which often boil down to them exchanging their knowelege and skills for materials and equipment they cannot manufacture. They also trade for tissue samples and fossils all the way back from Earth, though very rarely, considering the price.

Man, if they got velociraptors in those parks I'd want to live there :D Sounds fun.
