Själ Brēkar (Syol Brea-Quer)

The Soul Breaker was given its name before the first stone was placed. When Edwardson the architect was given instructions for the new prison in Steegan, that was the directive. No matter what condition the criminal was going in, he had to be shattered upon his or her release.

Edwardson had to fight his every instinct to produce a functional building while neglecting the aesthetics he was known for. Looking at the bleak one story building, no one could possibly guess the architect for this prison is the same one who designed and built three of the great five concert halls of Shemuford.

During the design and construction of the Själ Brēkar, every precaution has been taken to prevent any escape and to ensure amenability from every inmate. First, every inmate walking in will be stripped bare and searched. One by one, they will be given one pair of pants, one shirt, one spoon and one cup. The instructions were short and clear: do not lose the spoon or cup since no replacement will be given. Once everyone is dressed and equipped, they are blindfolded and shackled. For the next twenty to thirty minutes, the chain gang will be marched up and down corridors. Up and down stairs. Round and round. Once the guards are certain that the new inmates are adequately mollified, they are unshackled and thrown in one of five possible cells. Each cell was identical: The room measured two thousand two crown's hand (1900 square foot) with four cement walls, packed dirt floor, cement ceiling, one barred window measuring one crown's hand tall (8 inches) by four crown's hand long (32 inches) and one reinforced metal door.

It was not uncommon that three hundred inmates would be crammed into one cell. Every few months groups of twenty to fifty inmates would be transferred shackled and blindfolded from one cell to another. Twice a day food was served one the whole cell was quiet enough to be served. More than once the head guard would cancel one meal even if everyone was so quiet that only the flies could be heard buzzing.

During the first year, a handful of non dangerous criminals were released early with the sole objective to spread the word about the conditions in Själ Brēkar. Within less than one cycle, the amount of petty crimes was reduced drastically. Throughout the last fifteen cycles, once a year a few convicts are still released to continue to spread the myth. Hundreds of criminals have died, some by suicide but most at each others hands. The one important statistic as far as the Pwerus Kuintë is concerned, no one has ever escaped the Soul Breaker.

Well, only two inmates have ever escaped.
