Adeliza remembers fondly her childhood in Estergan. Following her sister around, always treated like a princess wherever she went. At home, she was the youngest and looked up to her mother who walked tall and was strong. Lyras was the matron of the neighborhood. People came from all over to ask for her guidance and help.
If she looked up at her mother, Adeliza idolized her sister. She was the strongest person ever. She has once seen her sister manhandle a much older and bigger man. She did not understand why really, but judging by the profanity coming out of his mouth, he possibly deserved it.
Only a few years later did Adileza truly understand the shadowy side of her mother's dominion. She had seen money exchange hands regularly but now she understood the reason. Bribery, gambling, even murder. How could she forget the look of despair on her sister's face when their mother named Adileza as her second in command. Her sister left before she could refuse the position and they have not seen each other since.
After a drunken night, Adileza decided to counter balance her family's influence and left Estergan that day. On her trek across the land, she has helped everyone in need she could, volunteering in hospitals, feeding the poor, and protecting the just. All the good deeds she has done so far are a placeholder for the cause she is still yearning for. All Adileza is looking for is something grander than herself.
While she is searching, she is also making penance for her family's poor deeds, but for her own. She never killed, robbed, bribed or molested anyone. She did something worse. On her last drunken night, in a moment of poor judgement, her oversharing parts of her family's practices landed her sister in jail.
Foremost on her mind is: how will Arleigh react when the two sisters finally come face to face?
