The heavy rains alternate with a harsh dry season every six months. During the rainy season, the water turns the earth to mud and heavy winds tear the leaves off of trees, and most citizens of the cities and towns flee the cruel weather; their houses are build on tall stalks to survives the rising water levels, all structures being connected by bridges. In the dry season, large fields of cacti have been more than replenished, and farmers harvest their fruit as well as other agricultural products that are specially grown in this strange environment. Certain animals dig holes to hibernate in during the dry season, holes which are opened and flooded when the rains come, letting them know when it is right to go back into the swampy valleys. Animals that flourish in the dry season find high perches to await the end of the rains in relatively dry safety.
