    First Contact
    Era beginning/end

Pioneers venturing to the Wolf 1061 system discover an unexpected guest in the stellar neighborhood: alien "life", for some definition of the word. The first Kotoli enclave is discovered, proving centuries of theories and sparking a revolution in human thought. Outbreak of the Contact War
    Military action

In search of useful technology and ignorant of the consequences of displacing barely-active sapients from their world, the Sixth Fleet is deployed to Wolf 1061 to effect the relocation of the Kotoli. All contact is lost with the Fleet, and any courier ships sent to rendezvous fail to return. President Zima officially introduces a motion to declare war upon the Kotoli, passed by a slim margin by the Union Council.

    End of the Contact War
    Diplomatic action

As large swathes of the Union Naval Corps lie shattered, the Union Council sends an unarmed envoy to the Kotoli. Surprisingly, the envoy is unengaged and received as a friend; the Kotoli immediately accept the proposal of a ceasefire, which develops into peace proper. The blame for the Naval Corps' decimation is laid at the hands of their fleet commanders for "failing" to evaluate the threat they faced or to concede in the face of overwhelming force.

    Coup of 2236
    Military action

In the wake of the Contact War, radical factions of the Solar Union weigh the threat of extraterrestrial life capable of, themselves, creating self-improving machines and unleashing them upon the universe. Motivated by a belief that preparation better suited humanity than extinction, the disgraced fleet admiral Nikolas Fuentes leads elements of the Eighth Fleet in a coup against the Sol system itself. Covertly aided by top-ranking military officials and playing on the sympathies of the masses to "inhuman monsters in the stars beyond," Fuentes deposes the Solar Union's president and establishes himself at the head of the new ruling council. The unsteady peace of the last five years transforms into building tensions.
