Carrier (class)

Carriers are a specialized class of warship built around the function of carrying fighters into battle. They can be a range of sizes, anywhere from the size of a heavy destroyer to much bigger than battleships and even small dreadnoughts. Carriers are usually a big target during battles, as their command of many fighters can turn the tide of battle. Despite this, carriers usually sacrifice firepower to make more room to carry fighters, and are often only armed with a couple mid-tier weapons (notable exceptions come in the form of formidable assault carriers). Shield power varies in the cases of different carriers, with some having no shields and some of the largest having up to 6 layers. In addition to shields, the armor on these ships is usually better than average, almost matching that of battleships. Because the qualifications for being a carrier are so flexible, requiring only the capability to house and deploy fighter units, many ships of other classes double as carriers. Some battleships, battlecruisers, and even cruisers house small fleets of fighters, making them technically a carrier in addition to their main classification. Even more commonly, a majority of dreadnoughts carry fighters in addition to their heavy weaponry, and the dreadnought and carrier classes can become blurred in the cases of larger "supercarrier" ships.
