Polymorph
Tier 4 Spell (Daunting(d d d d) difficulty)
"The greatest strength of Humanity is our understanding of reality. We wake up each morning and know that the sun rises in the east, we have work in half an hour, and our hands allow us to do it with excellence. So imagine one day you wake up to find the sun rising in the west, and you stretch your hand out to find it has become a paw. Suddenly, the room around you grows, you gain a tail, and fur covers your body. That is the horror that this spell presents: not just change, but the destruction of stability, and the usurping of the norm."Some believe that the most powerful spells out there can level buildings and destroy planets. While this has some merit, most experienced wizards tend to disagree. They believe that while force can break mountains, the true test of a mage's power is being able to put it back together. Thus, the general consensus of the wizarding community is that this spell, Polymorph, is the most powerful Arcane spell known. This spell can physically transform a target into a completely different race, species, or even object. It does this by bombarding the target with magical energy that reshapes its molecular structure and, in the case of organic lifeforms, reconfigures their internal biology. This is the main reason why it is so difficult to cast: the large amount of focus needed to ensure the energy does its job, while accounting for differences in mass, bone structure, configuration of organs, and dietary needs combined with the large amounts of energy used in the process, make this a very challenging spell to perform correctly. When not executed perfectly, the results can be disastrous. The effects of failure range from the target being turned into an unexpected form, to the caster's hands being changed or ruined, or the spell targeting a completely different individual. Fortunately, the chance of failure can be reduced by assistance from one or more mages, provided they are all on the same page as to what the final form is. There also exist a variety of scrolls containing specialized Polymorph spells that only turn the target into one form, but are far more stable than most attempts made on the fly.
Effect
This spell transforms a target into whatever form the caster desires, although certain forms may upgrade some d to c at the GM's discretion. If the target is unwilling, they must make a Daunting(dddd) Discipline check, or be transformed by the spell.
Manifestation
Polymorph manifests as a bombardment of misty energy, emanating from the caster's hands and enveloping and changing the target.
Gestures & Ritual
To cast this spell, the user must focus clearly on the form they desire the target to become, and channel their energy at the target through their hand(s). They cannot break their concentration, or else the transformation will likely be incomplete. It is possible to change a target into a very large form, but this requires the use of spell reagents to supplement the missing matter. The reagents can vary in size, but must be no bigger than twice the size of the target, and be made of organic material in the case of living beings.
