Elements

Elements are an aspect of Magic. Every deity, spell, and monster will have an Element. These three are occasionally referred to collectively as Elementals. Armor and weapons can also be Elementally Enchanted. Enchanted Armor will grant the wearer both a damage boost when casting a spell with that Element and give its defensive attributes. Enchanted Weapons allow non-spell attacks to inflict Elemental damage. There are twelve active Elements, each one corresponding to a deity.   The twelve elements are Aerial, Aqua, Artifice, Blight, Circumstance, Dissonance, Judgment, Solar, Temporal, Terra, Unison, and Vitality. There exists an extinct thirteenth element that can no longer be used, so it no longer holds relevance to combat.
  1. Aerial: Caused by the Goddess Praudena. It represents wind and weather.
  2. Aqua: Caused by the God Frae. It represents any natural body of water.
  3. Artifice: Caused by the God Vumamur. It represents technology and the knowledge used to create it.
  4. Blight: Caused by the God Illik. It represents decay, illness, and death.
  5. Circumstance: A combination of all Elements. It represents consequences, monsters, and magic.
  6. Dissonance: Caused by the God Maura. It represents chaos, combat, and confusion.
  7. Judgment:Caused by the Goddess Judis. It represents morality, the inner self, and decisions.
  8. Solar: Caused by the God Auxtro. It represents the sun, fire, and the volcano.
  9. Temporal: Caused by the God Riyo. It represents time, space, and change.
  10. Terra: Caused by the Goddess Min. It represents terrain, the planet, and occasionally the moon.
  11. Unison: Caused by the Goddess Hau. It represents order, structure, and organization.
  12. Vitality: Caused by the Goddess Venkunalis. It represents life, new beginnings, and sentience.
  13. Wellbeing: An extinct element once caused by Aur. It can no longer be found in the air but is sometimes found in ancient enchantments. It once represented health, safety, and thriving.

Elements can be weak or strong against one another. The following table describes these matchups. For example, 1x means the damage type is normal, 2x means the attack does twice the normal damage against that element, and 0.5x means it does half the normal damage. Every element has two weaknesses and two strengths.   Offending Element is VERTICAL ↕ and Defending Element is HORIZONTAL ↔

Nicely done! I love how much thought you've put into the chart, it makes the elements feel more dynamic in relation to one another. Kepp up the good work!

Thank you so much! The chart was a nightmare.

Nice setup. Looking forward to seeing more of this project, and curious to see your logic for the elemental strengths and weaknesses once you've got them formally written up.

Thank you for looking forward to it! One of these days I'll have those typed up. As it stands I'd need... *gently taps calculator* ... 48 written explanations...

UPDATE: Sorry to alert you all again, but I added explanations for the type matchups. :D

I only have 10 "Elements" in my setting, I do not envy the amount of extra work you have set up here!   Is there any place to read up on your thoughts for why each element was added? I may be thinking of Elements in too classical of a sense, but I don't understand "Artifice" or "Judgement" as being Elements. Either way, watching this closely! (I laughed at the tooltips gradually getting more silly as you ran out of ideas. Haha)

Sure, I can explain a bit!   The elements are a part of magic. Magic in this universe is a byproduct of the Gods using their own powers. Each God produces a different "byproduct", which is where elements come from. So they aren't so much as "what the universe is made of" and more "a reflection of the gods".   Circumstance, however, is not the result of any particular God. Circumstance, also called Consequence and also Magic, represents the byproduct of the Gods. It is the element of the final boss.

I really appreciate how you did the "elements", and the fact that you stuck to different ones. As someone who has a world built around the number 13, I thought doing anything like 13 facets would be quite impossible, but this shows that obviously not! Good work!

Not impossible, just painful. Thank you! :D

XD Blooming love the wee comments you made explaining why you've made different elements stronger and weaker.. the Dissonance-Blight one made me chuckle indeed!

I'm glad you had a giggle over those! This world is a comedy first and foremost so I thought I'd give a little fun spin on some.

Thank you! It took a little while but I got there in the end.

Neat and concise article! To be fair, I don't know much about your world so I don't know how much my following questions are going to apply. I'd be quite interested to know about what exactly these elements are, how they take shape- do they exist naturally? Do they only play a role with magic? Do different cultures have different relationships to them? Are some elements associated to specific ideas, like how fire is passion and light is good (would there be a typically bad element and a typically good one, for instance)? How are the elements linked to the gods- did the gods make them, are the gods incarnations of these elements, or are the elements created by the gods? If its the later, why did the gods create these elements, and who gets to use them as powers? Hope these questions help spark some stuff :)

God I'm sorry I didn't realise how much I had written, this is one huge block- I hope you manage to get through it -.-'

Funny enough, you posted this while I was improving the article and working on an explanation for magic. I'll answer a few of your questions here:

  • The new article Magic explains how Elements are formed, and the effect they have on the world.
  • For the most part, yes, Elements are strictly magical.
  • Different cultures may worship different deities. Naturally, these worshipers tend to be more skilled in that deity's specific element. Culture would definitely affect at least how commonly a certain element is used in an area.
  • The only moral element is Judgment, which exists as the balance between "right" and "wrong". Decay is not necessarily evil and Vitality is not necessarily pure.
  • The "Elements link to the Gods" question has been both answered in the new Magic article and has been appended to near the top of this one.
  • Anyone who can refine the Elements may use the Elements. The Gods have no choice how you use these powers.

Ooh cool, thats interesting! Thank you for answering my many questions :), I like the section you included at the beginning, very much looking forward to reading about these gods!

"What's chaos going to do? Make the rot worse?" Hahaaha.   I love the little icons for each element. :D

I feel sorry for every magician and scholar that has to memorise these.

They don't usually! A sorcerer will often focus on a single element, and in terms of gameplay, the game will tell you in red or green text whether your attack will be effective, neutral, or resisted.

Phew. I can only imagine the nightmare it'd be otherwise.
