The Pits' War Military Conflict in Spirit of the Age | World Anvil

The Pits' War

Triggered by the refusal of the Alfne-Cacni Confederation to find ways to increase sulfur production for the Runberi market, the Pits' War was a short affair. Arraying the clan militias of the Alfne-Cacni against the mercenary army of the Red Sails, the superior training and weapons system of the latter proved dominant. The Veleii kingdom capitulated in full after 6 days. Though the clans mobilized most of their forces to stop the Condominium from capturing the sulfur pits of the Cacni, the Condominium had a decisive advantage in equipment and command. The Red Sails were able to sail upriver with their ships armed with cannon, and even their infantry was better armed and armored than the clan militias.   The war had three major battles. First, the Runberi bombarded Spur Alfne to secure their way upriver. The Veleii had gathered their force on the hills, where they attempted to oppose the Red Sails landing. The resultant battle of the Cacni Hills was a one-sided affair as the clan militias were unable to stand against the relatively disciplined Runberi formation. After initial casualties routed the clans, most of them retreated back downriver towards Spur Alfne, while the Cacni attempted to defend their village. The Red Sails then butchered their way through to the sulfur pits, and captured most of the remaining clan. The rest of the confederation proved unable to do anything to defend Spur Alfne, and another evening of bombardment forced an unconditional surrender out of the Alfne chief.   The war was over, forever changing the character of the Condominium in the Tescaries.

The Conflict

Outcome

The Condominium achieved total victory, completely meeting their objectives with few casualties. Spur Alfne became an operating base for the company, and the sulfur pits formerly operated by clan Cacni were turned over to the control of a Runberi overseer.

Aftermath

Clan Cacni was largely scattered and destroyed, and with a large part of its population killed or enslaved by the Condominium. Those parts of the clan that were not enslaved have scattered across the archipelago, and some have gone back to work in the sulfur pits as they have been expanded. With Cacni's power and prestige broken, many highland clans that formerly dealt with them have moved deeper into the ridge. Though the rest of the confederation emerged somewhat intact, they can no longer truly call themselves sovereign, and have been forced to accept terms laid out to them by the Runberi.   The war proved to the Condominium that they could simply wage war on the clans and get away with it. While regarded as an unjustified war of foreign aggression throughout the isles, most clans also realized that they were in no position to deny the company. Though the evolution from a simple mercantile endeavor to an imperial one had already started with the increasing use of mercenaries and the formation of the Red Sails, the Pits' War was the first time the Condominium attacked a clan confederation directly. Since then, the Condominium has been much more aggressive, and has taken direct control of and established new sulfur pits in the isles. Finding slavery in the sulfur pits to be profitable, the Condominium's behavior has made many in the home cities uncomfortable. However, the ever increasing profits they have been distributing to their stockholders have served to close the eyes of the Runberi to their malfeasance.

Poor clans. :( They really stood no chance at all, did they?
