Fear Gortach

In the times of Helkah, the elves of Exodus raged across Khely, uprooting the groves of the fae, putting their servants to the sword and ripping away the hearts of the greater fae. Most of these entities, mighty though they may have been when they could draw upon the power of the land and the forests, died. A few managed to retreat into the Borderworld or The Light.   A few greater fae managed to survive the experience, but were stranded on the Prime Material and robbed of the bond to the land that had kept them sustained in the past. Though the greater fae did not care much for the civilized races to begin with, the attack against their groves embittered them and made many of them desire revenge. Further, these creatures suddenly had to deal with a sensation they had never experienced in their immortal existences: Hunger.   Cut off from their source of vitality, they were forced to consume it from their surroundings to cling to life. And unlike a normal predator, these Fear Gortach could never be full. It was only their self-control and prudence that kept them from eating every living thing in the forests they resided in. Many of them turned on human settlements, seeking revenge for Helkah. A few wasted away. Exodus, for its part, hunted the monsters they had created with single-minded focus, tracking and exterminating them wherever they were found. Today, a few remain, the most cunning and dangerous of them all to have survived the centuries alone.   It is difficult to speak of the general traits of the Fear Gortach, as they are as varied as the fae they were before. Some appears as spritelike humanoids, some are great walking trees, some mighty animals. However, there is something subtly or overtly wrong with them, obvious to anyone who is familiar with normal fae. They become more powerful as they consume life, channeling the vitality they consume into the magic they wield. All are intelligent, and have the long perspective of an immortal, though the threat of starvation makes their concerns somewhat more immediate than those of most fae. Most prefer to feast on humans and particularly elves when they can, and their lifespan has no natural end. A Fear Gortach lives forever or starves.   Most people have no means to identify a Fear Gortach, and encounters are likely to be fatal unless the monster wishes to hide its presence. Luckily for the people of Khely, only a handful exist.
