Vu'Ko'Kita Ethnicity in Spindle | World Anvil

Vu'Ko'Kita

A nomadic culture whose home is the Vu'Ko'Tin desert, the Vu'Ko'Kita are mostly elven and human, with half elves becoming more and more common with every passing season . The Vu'Ko'Kita travel the desert they call home, the only ones who are able to navigate it successfully, moving from region to region, often at the whims of the desert itself which shifts in ways that only the cultures elven mystics can predict. Taking their covered wagons along routes no outsider could discern, the entire culture will come together once every two or three seasons when one of the old settlements will emerge from the sand, like a wreckage at low tide.   The Vu'Ko'Kita was at its start an elven culture, the desert people whose ancestral home is the Vu'Ko'Tin, they were a warm people whose everyday struggle to survive in left them always willing to help a stranger or traveler. So welcoming were the elves to those who wished to join them that many humans began to travel with the semi-nomadic caravan clans. Today few would describe the Vu'Ko'Kita as an elven culture, for indeed the humans are so intermingled that there is almost an even split between the races, human, elf and increasingly half elf.

Three parts of a whole

Jun

The elven portion of the Vu'Ko'Kita are known as the Jun, literally "Elf" in the language, they are often the leaders in a clan but often only due to their longer lifespan. a traditionally meritocratic society the Jun accepted humans easily due initially to their natural gift for versatility. Of the Jun there is often born individuals who are chosen for more whose natural ability marks them for more. These chosen ones are said to be of one of the three Zaix'Ixan, the bloodlines. Each are tied to a totem and play a specific role in the clan. The first and most common is the Cactus fox, chosen to be warriors and protectors, their skill with the Kusarigama is renowned. Next is the Glass Ant, scouts and rangers, their ability to survive alone in the Vu'Ko'Tin is unmatched. and lastly the Moon Moth, Known as Flo'ang'Jun,  Mystics who have an understanding of the forces below the desert, who are able to predict how the sands will flow and where the clan should move to next. Each of these roles is integral to the survival of a clan, and the culture as a whole. If a single clan is lucky enough to have many moths or foxes born to it, then those chosen will often leave the clan to find one that needs them or to begin their own.

Bok'Jun

The human portion of the Vu'Ko'Kita is known as the Bok'Jun, or "Not-Elf" the humans of the culture have been welcomed completely into it, although they are not of the elf bloodlines they humans have shown that not only did the elves choose them but so too did the desert. known for their versatility and adaptability, the desert has shaped the Bok'Jun of the Vu'Ko;Kita into something different than a regular human from other regions in spindle. The Bok'Jun have access to a fighting spirit that seems to shape the sand around them. dubbed the Sand Rage, this allows them to stand toe to toe with and Glass ant Jun on the front line and on occasion a step ahead of them.

Jun'Bok'Jun

Half elves the Jun'Bok'Jun are uniquely celebrated by the Vu'Ko'Kita, seen by many to be the true future of the culture. Thus far no Jun'Bok'Jun (often called Juboju for short) have been chosen by any of the Zaix'Ixan, nor have any shown any sign of the sand rage of the Bok'Jun. rather they have found themselves often drawn to another product of the desert, that of the desert glass that forms when one of the regions many lightning storms hits. those who show willing have found a remarkable talent for shaping the raw product. Out of this the glassmithers have arisen, a faction within the Jun'Bok'Jun that are dedicated to understanding and exploring the properties of the desert glass t. So far the advances they have made have allowed them to craft new weapons sharper than any steel. And they continue to work toward more and more exotic goal.

Language

Something that surprises many who encounter the Vu'Ko'Kita is that their primary language is elven, everyone speaks it even the humans, and more surprising still is how little the language has changed since its origins.

Myths and Legends

Whilst none of even the eldest elves have stories from even their grandparents about what was before the desert, those among them who care to look can see it hidden in their language. Take the word for bloodline "Zaix'Ixan" it means literally family tree, "Zaix" being tree and "Ixan" being family. Why, many scholars wonder, would a desert dwelling peoples have words such as this? After all there is no word for snow in the elven language. In truth this hints to the deep roots of connection that the Vu'Ko'Kita have with the land they feel drawn to roam. in ages past the great forests of old were home to a great civilisation of elves, the first of the weavers children. but when she chose her 14 to step up and join her in the heavens, the others attempted to rebel, an action that say them buried under a desert and sealed away for all time.
